Oklahoma Primary Care Association

Oklahoma Primary Care Association We aim to strengthen access to affordable, community-based care through advocacy and education.

Since opening in 1993, Oklahoma Primary Care Association's efforts to strengthen access to affordable community-based health care have resulted in unprecedented community health center (CHC) growth. To date, CHC presence has increased by almost 600% in Oklahoma with continued growth expected. Tens of thousands of Oklahomans now have access to affordable, high quality, comprehensive health care. With help from state partners, OKPCA has connected Oklahoma communities with approximately 19 million in increased annual funding since 2001.

Chief medical officer inspires young women: "Toni Ramos, Community Health Connection’s chief medical officer, does it all. She’s a full-time pediatrician and manages a team of roughly 26 people while also training medical students. On top of that, she has five children ranging in age from three to 17."

“God gives me strength to do this,” Ramos said.

As Women’s History Month wraps up, we highlight four women who are connecting communities through their work with students and neighbors.

Today, we celebrate Community Health Center doctors, who care for 1 in 7 Americans across urban, rural, frontier, and island communities. Over the past decade, their numbers have grown by more than 50%—a testament to the vital role they play in increasing access to affordable, high-quality care. Every day, their commitment to patients’ health and well-being reflects a deep dedication to both community and the medical profession.

Across the United States, Community Health Centers are the primary delivery system for pediatric care, especially for children with limited access to care.

New analysis from NACHC’s Dr. John W. Hatch Center for Science shows that 1 in 4 Medicaid-covered and uninsured children rely on Community Health Centers.

As the largest primary care system for low-income children, Community Health Centers play a central role in pediatric care, where policy decisions directly impact access today and shape lifelong health through prevention.

Community Health Centers play a critical role in prevention and early detection, providing care to 1 in 7 Americans nationwide.

In 2024, Community Health Centers screened more than 3.8 million patients for colorectal cancer. These screenings are vital. Colorectal cancer claims the lives of more than 50,000 people in the U.S. each year, yet this cancer can be prevented with screening and is highly treatable when detected early.

This is preventive care in action—reaching communities with limited access to health care and helping save lives every day.

A big part of staying healthy happens before illness.

Preventive care includes screenings before symptoms appear, routine labs, vaccinations, health risk assessments, and guidance for everyday habits that support your health.
