This International Women’s Day, we’re honored to recognize Mary Frances Horton, a woman whose life reflects faith, resilience, and a deep commitment to others.
Mary Frances devoted decades to education—as a teacher, reading specialist, and principal—believing deeply in the goodness of every child. Early in her career, her passion for literacy led her to earn a master’s degree as a reading specialist, helping countless students find confidence and success in learning. During her children’s early years, she also served as a Montessori preschool administrator, shaping foundational learning experiences for young children and mentoring early childhood educators.
After retiring from education, Mary Frances was called to serve in a new way—helping establish and lead child safety education programs across Catholic schools and parishes in the Kansas City–St. Joseph Diocese. Working alongside educators and parents, she helped select and implement curriculum that continues to protect children and families today.
Today, Mary Frances calls Santa Marta home. Here, she finds joy in daily worship, shared meals, conversation, movement, and friendship—and in being part of a community rooted in Christian values and genuine care for one another.
Her life has been shaped by strong women, especially her mother, Miriam, who raised six children with courage, generosity, and faith—welcoming others into her home and quietly supporting many along the way.
We’re grateful to celebrate Mary Frances—and all the women of Santa Marta whose lives of service, leadership, and love continue to inspire our community.
