Birth story coming one day soon…
But for now, just sharing - home birth with twins in Maine is still a thing. ✨❤️❤️✨
In Maine, the landscape for twin home birth has changed dramatically since the midwifery licensure law took effect in January of 2020.
Before, skilled and experienced midwives were attending twin births at home - supporting women through one of the most complex and beautiful journeys of their lives.
Now, due to restrictions that took effect in 2020, licensed midwives are no longer allowed to attend twin home births in Maine - even though in several other states, licensure laws do support licensed midwives attending twin home births.
In short, midwifery regulation across the US, is kind of a fu***ng mess…
In Maine, this leaves women with what seems like two options: go to the hospital or do it yourself - or in other words, free birth.
Both can be safe and valid choices, but what’s missing is the fundamental right to choose a skilled and more supported home birth if that’s what they truly want and are fully informed about and prepared for.
Women deserve the freedom to choose the care that aligns with their values and comfort - and that includes access to midwives who are trained and experienced with supporting twin births at home.
It should be about respecting autonomy and trusting women and families to make the best decisions for themselves and their babies.
