With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Jonathan Janes on March 9, 2026, at the age of 54.
Jonathan’s life was a powerful story of redemption, resilience, and second chances. After spending 32 years behind bars, he stepped back into the world determined to truly live. In just a few short years, he experienced so many of life’s moments that many take for granted. He saw the ocean for the first time, regained his independence, got his driver’s license back, and embraced the freedom to build a new life.
He loved deeply, especially his family. Jonathan had a special place in his heart for babies and children, always taking time to sit, play, and share laughter. He found peace in fishing and hunting, joy in traveling, and purpose in his faith. After finding Jesus, he dedicated himself to helping others, especially those struggling with addiction, offering hope through his own story.
Though his time with us after his release was far too short, he filled it with meaning, growth, and love. He showed that no matter how much time has passed, it is never too late to change and to live fully.
He is survived by his brothers, Sammy Janes (Kelly), Carl Smith (Stella), and Walter Janes; and his sister, Denise Oprzedek (Bryan). He was a cherished uncle and loved by many.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his father, David Janes; his mother, Rosie Crawhorn Kennedy; his stepmother, Catherine Janes; and his brothers, Randy Janes and David Janes.
A celebration of life will be held on March 22 at 4:00 PM at New Beginnings, 194 Promiseland Drive, Grayson, Kentucky.
His story will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. 🤍
