🍊 4. Antioxidants Protect Against Vision Loss

Vitamin C & E are powerful antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress in the eye.

Oxidative damage is linked to cataracts and retinal conditions like Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

🍓 Load up on:
• Citrus fruits
• Berries
• Almonds
• Sunflower seeds

Protect your sight from the inside out.

Dry vs. Wet AMD — What’s the Difference?

There are two types of AMD:

👁️ Dry AMD – The more common form. Develops gradually.
👁️ Wet AMD – Less common but more aggressive. Caused by abnormal blood vessel growth under the retina.

The American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes that while dry AMD progresses slowly, wet AMD can cause rapid vision changes.

Prompt evaluation = better outcomes.

If you notice sudden distortion or central vision changes, call your eye doctor right away. 💛

Early Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

AMD doesn’t always start with dramatic vision loss.

Watch for:
⚠️ Blurry central vision
⚠️ Straight lines appearing wavy
⚠️ Dark or empty spots in the center of vision
⚠️ Needing brighter light to read

The American Optometric Association emphasizes that early stages may have little to no symptoms — which is why routine exams matter.

If something looks “off,” don’t wait.

Your central vision is too important. 💛

DID YOU KNOW?
👉🏼Myopia management (not JUST GLASSES) focuses on slowing progression of the condition! Common treatments include prescription glasses AND contact lenses for clear distance vision. Specialized options like miSight, orthokeratology (overnight reshaping lenses), and atropine eye drops can slow myopia in children.

🍎Lifestyle changes, such as increased outdoor time and reduced near work, also help. For adults, refractive surgeries like LASIK or PRK may offer permanent correction. Regular eye exams are essential to monitor changes and adjust treatment plans. Early intervention is key to reducing long-term risks like retinal detachment or glaucoma associated with high myopia.

Let’s learn more about miSight next week!! Stay tuned!

What is MYOPIA?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common vision condition where close objects appear clear, but distant objects look blurry. It occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

👉🏼Myopia typically develops in childhood and may progress with age. Genetics and environmental factors, like excessive screen time 💻 or lack of outdoor activity, can contribute.

👉🏼It is usually corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery. Regular eye exams are needed to help manage OR even SLOW DOWN nearsightedness, especially in children and adolescents.

Next week we will talk about HOW we can MANAGE IT!
