🚨🐴 Important Equine Health Update 🐴🚨
We’ve had several questions lately about EHV-1, so we’re sharing a quick, easy-to-read breakdown to help keep our horse community informed and protected. Please take a moment to read and share with fellow horse owners!
What is EHV-1?
• Equine Herpes Virus AKA equine rhinopneumonitis ("rhino") AKA equine abortion virus
• A highly contagious virus that is passed via nasal secretions (nose touching, sharing buckets, sharing equipment, and horse-to-human-to-horse contact)
• This virus can spread very quickly and may even come from a horse who doesn't appear to be sick at the time
• Affects all equids (horses, ponies, donkeys, mules, etc.)
• There is no specific treatment or cure for this disease
What are symptoms of EHV-1?
• Fever: re**al temperature over 102°F
• Nasal discharge, coughing, swollen lymph nodes
• Lethargy
• Miscarriage in pregnant mares & death of young foals
• Neurologic signs: acting "off," stumbling, tail paralysis, going down
Who is at risk?
• Horses who travel to shows/events
• Horses who live in boarding facilities
• Foals and young horses
• Pregnant mares
• Horses coming from auctions
• Immune-compromised horses (such as those with Cushing's disease)
How to protect your horse:
• Make sure they are FULLY VACCINATED annually with their flu/rhino vaccine (twice a year for high-risk horses)
• Weigh risks vs. benefits of travel during this time
• Practice good biosecurity measures such as hand washing, avoid commingling with horses you do not know, and don't share water buckets/tack/etc.
How Salt Creek can help:
• Call us to schedule your horse for their annual vaccines, or to make sure they are up-to-date!
