Developmental milestones are helpful guides, but every child reaches them at their own pace.

Some toddlers walk earlier, while others focus first on language, problem solving, or social skills. Differences in timing are common and often part of normal development!

Comparing children to siblings, classmates, or children on social media can sometimes create unnecessary worry. What matters most is steady progress over time and opportunities for children to explore, play, and practice new skills!

Well visits are an important time to review development, answer questions, and identify any concerns early.

If you have questions about your child’s development or milestones, bring them up at your next visit so progress can be reviewed together!

Introducing common food allergens is an important step when babies begin eating solid foods! Foods such as peanut, egg, dairy, wheat, soy, and fish are often introduced during the first year of life. Current guidance supports introducing these foods once a baby is developmentally ready for solids, typically around 4–6 months.

When introducing a new allergen, offer it in a safe form, when your baby is healthy, and when you can closely supervise!

For example, peanut can be mixed as a small amount of smooth peanut butter thinned into a puree the baby has already tolerated. After introducing a new allergen, watch for signs of a reaction such as hives, swelling, vomiting, coughing, or difficulty breathing!

If your baby has severe eczema, known food allergies, or a family history of allergies, it may be helpful to discuss introduction plans with your provider.

Do you have questions about introducing allergen foods? Contact South Sound Peds for individualized guidance!

The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program provides important nutrition and health support for pregnant people, infants, and young children up to age five who qualify.

WIC can help families access healthy foods, breastfeeding support, nutrition education, and referrals to other community services that support family health.

These resources are designed to help support healthy growth and development during some of the most important years of a child’s life.

Families who think they may qualify can ask our office for help connecting with local WIC programs and learning more about available services.

Choosing sunscreen doesn’t have to be confusing!

Look for SPF 30 or higher, apply generously, and reapply every two hours, or sooner if swimming or sweating. Mineral sunscreens are often well tolerated for sensitive skin.

Remember to pair sunscreen with hats, shade, and protective clothing for the best coverage!

For infants younger than 6 months, consult with your provider prior to using any sunscreen products.

Questions about sunscreen or skin sensitivity? Give South Sound Pediatrics a call so we can help keep your child’s skin safe.

Polio was once one of the most feared diseases affecting children. Before vaccines were available, thousands of children each year developed paralysis, and some required iron lungs to help them breathe.

Communities experienced outbreaks that caused lifelong disability and, in some cases, death.

The development of the polio vaccine in the 1950s dramatically changed the course of this disease!

Widespread vaccination led to a rapid decline in cases, and polio has now been eliminated in most parts of the world!

Vaccination continues to be important to keep polio from returning. Keeping children up to date on recommended immunizations helps protect both individuals and communities from diseases that once caused serious harm!

If you are unsure whether your child is up to date on vaccines, call us at South Sound Pediatrics and we can review their immunization record.

Has your child got a runny, itchy nose?

For children with allergies or asthma, the bedroom is an important place to reduce exposure to common allergens! Dust mites, pet dander, and other irritants can build up in bedding, carpets, and stuffed animals and may worsen nighttime symptoms.

Simple steps can help create a lower allergen environment! Washing bedding weekly in hot water, using allergen-proof mattress and pillow covers, and keeping pets off the bed can make a difference. Limiting stuffed animals on the bed and vacuuming or dusting regularly may also help reduce allergen exposure.

If your child has ongoing allergy symptoms, contact us to discuss evaluation and management options!

A preventive visit (well visit) focuses on routine care such as growth and development, vaccines, screenings, and age-appropriate guidance.

A problem-focused visit addresses specific concerns like ongoing symptoms, new illnesses, behavior concerns, medication adjustments, or chronic condition management.

If new or significant medical issues are discussed and evaluated during a preventive visit, both services may be billed. This is because the time, medical decision-making, and documentation required for addressing a problem go beyond routine preventive care.

Understanding the difference helps avoid surprises and ensures concerns are fully addressed!

You can always ask about visit types and billing ahead of time so you know what to expect. Our billing team has an abundance of knowledge to answer all of your questions!

Curfews are less about control and more about safety, responsibility, and trust. Clear expectations around time, location, transportation, and communication help teens make safer choices and reduce risky situations!

Discuss curfews openly- such as what time is reasonable, how plans should be communicated, and what happens if expectations aren’t met.

When boundaries are clear and consistent, conflict often decreases because everyone understands the rules.

Curfews can also support healthy sleep, which plays a major role in mood, focus, and overall health!

Your teen’s wellness visit is a great time to chat with a provider about setting boundaries and curfews. Need to schedule? Call us at (360) 456-1600 today to get on the books!

Does your child stutter?

Some speech disfluencies such as repeating sounds or words can be a normal part of language development, especially during periods of rapid growth in younger children. Many kids outgrow this phase on their own! However, new-onset stuttering after about age 6 is less common and deserves closer attention.

It’s a good idea to consider a speech evaluation if stuttering lasts longer than 6 months, is getting worse, causes frustration or avoidance of speaking, or is accompanied by tension or struggle behaviors!

Early support can make a big difference, and help is available.
If you have concerns about your child’s speech or notice changes after early childhood, reach out to our office or bring it up at your next visit.

You can schedule an appointment by calling our office at (360) 456-1600, or you can request an appointment through the portal!

Spring is a great time to refresh more than just our homes... It’s also a chance to check in on mental and emotional well-being!

Clearing mental clutter can be as simple as setting realistic expectations, taking breaks from constant notifications, spending time outdoors, or having regular check-ins about stress with your kids and teens.

Small boundaries like device-free meals or consistent bedtime routines can help both parents and kids feel more grounded.

If stress, worry, or mood changes are lingering or starting to affect daily life, reach out to our office or message us through the portal. We are here to support you and your family!

Is your toddler a picky eater?

Picky eating is very common in toddlers and often part of normal development. Many children need multiple exposures to a new food before they’re willing to try it!

Eating together as a family, offering the same meal for everyone (with at least one “safe” food), and letting your child decide whether and how much to eat can help build healthier habits over time.

Try to avoid pressure, bargaining, or forcing bites as these strategies often increase resistance rather than reduce it!

If you’re worried about your toddler’s growth, nutrition, or food variety, schedule a visit so we can review patterns and offer tips and tricks to help.
