The most caring and loving people we know most of the time do not get the care and love that they too need. Oftentimes, they put others needs first that their own self care gets neglected. Self care as a way of showing love has been set aside. It has been forgotten that the cup has to be full so one can continue to be there to help. Yesterday, someone reminded me that " It is not selfish to put your mask on before you assist the person next to you."
GIVE LOVE with SELF CARE!

It all started when I became an in-home caregiver for a 91 year old retired navy officcer.
His name was Charles R. Jensen aka Grandpa
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer back in 2012 by the time I met him things had gotten worse. He was never grumpy and always very polite even when he was in pain. He was used to being very independent and it took a lot for him to allow someone to do things for him that he would normally do for himself (bathing, dressing, bathroom use etc). He got too weak that he needed assistance getting up from his chair or the toilet. He could still walk around the house but I kept an eye on him most of the time to make sure he does not fall.
One day, while helping him up from his chair, I hurt my neck. Somehow I managed to pull him up the wrong way. At first, I did not think it was serious so I continued with my daily routine for a couple of days but after that the pain got worse. I went to a chiropractor and he told me I had bulging discs. I had to rest and go to a massage therapist to help with my pain. After 3 months of weekly massage, I got better and was able to go back to doing my full duties with Grandpa. I was able to give him the best care I could on his last months of life.
He passed away August 2018. Taking care of him brought a soft spot in my heart for the elderly and an understanding to the situation caregivers go through as they care for a loved one.
Pain is a constant in most of the elderly. I want to help alleviate that. With less pain, life is easier. Caregivers give so much and they tend to forget about taking care of themselves. But if they get hurt, then they lose their ability to help. I want to be a support to them so they can provide the best care they possibly can.
