Equipment is Hard!
Seriously. Figuring out what is best for you, what you like, when to buy what and where. Honestly, it can be very overwhelming.
When I first started playing golf in 3rd grade with my dad, I used what he was using...and I was very much not a 6'2" built man. 😅 As my skills developed, I went through several iterations of rented, borrowed, second-hand equipment. I honestly don't think we knew that beginner sets existed. 😆 By the time I was playing regularly and competing, my skill level required a custom set: fit for my hand size, arm length, height, clubhead speed, lie angles. It was an investment, and I played with the same clubs from 2007 until 2021 - I will admit I've been through a few drivers, putters, and wedges...my mom and I have an inclination to explore and share.
Here's what I recommend if you're just getting started:
1. Borrow clubs (friends, partners, spouse, parents)
2. Shop second hand and garage sales. Often they'll have trade-in deals, too!
3. Costco! I used their wedge set for the longest!
4. Put it on your birthday/Christmas list...let someone spoil you.
5. Try try try! Go to a golf store with used clubs that you can actually use in the store before committing to buying
6. Know that these purchases are pretty temporary. Just like you wouldn't wear someone else's shoes to run a 5k in...eventually you'll need YOUR OWN gear!
spoil you!
7. Get lessons and ask a pro to see what you're working with and WHEN it might be time to upgrade your equipment.
I hope this helps you! Comment below where you are in your golf equipment journey!
