Tinnitus Awareness Week is the perfect time to learn why you might be hearing ringing or buzzing that others cannot. Understanding how your brain creates these sounds is the first step toward finding some peace and quiet.

Tinnitus is defined as the experience of hearing sound without an external, acoustic source. While it is commonly referred to as “ringing in the ears,” tinnitus can also be described as buzzing, hissing, whistling, swooshing, and clicking.

ChatGPT created this cute little caricature of Dr. Vega today. It is fun to look behind her and see all the little details that AI thinks are "audiology" -- especially the Snellen chart... You might be wondering why that is there... but hearing loss and vision loss have a lot of connections. It is becoming more common for audiology practices to screen a patient's vision before fitting hearing aids so that we and help them use their hearing aid even if they can't see it well. But on an even deeper level, and are connected.

1. The Brain Processes Them Together

Hearing and vision aren’t isolated senses — your brain integrates them constantly to understand the world.

Examples:

Watching someone’s lips helps you understand speech in noise
Seeing facial expressions improves comprehension
Sound helps guide visual attention (like turning toward a voice)

This is called multisensory integration.

2. Hearing Loss Increases Reliance on Vision

When hearing decreases, people naturally compensate by using vision more.

That’s why patients often say:

“I hear better when I can see you”

“Masks made it so much harder to understand speech”

Audiology and visual cues are inseparable in real life communication.

3. Dual Sensory Loss Has a Big Impact

When someone has BOTH hearing and vision loss, the impact is much greater than either alone.

This is often called:
Dual sensory impairment

It affects:
balance
fall risk
cognition
independence
communication
Older adults are especially vulnerable.

4. Shared Aging Pathways

Both vision and hearing decline with age due to similar mechanisms:

vascular changes
neurodegeneration
oxidative stress
inflammation
That’s why hearing loss and vision loss often appear together in aging populations.

5. Hearing Loss Is Linked to Cognitive Decline -- and Vision Plays a Role Too

Research shows hearing loss is associated with increased risk of meaningful cognitive decline and dementia.
One reason is sensory deprivation:
less stimulation to the brain
more effort required to understand speech and reduced social interest

Hearing care is WHOLE PERSON healthcare.

We attended The Stories From the Warrior Society tonight at The Washington Center For Performing Arts. wanted to hear without straining, so he connected his aids to their NEW system — it is so easy to connect hearing aids to the system (if auracast compatible devices!) and it totally improved his experience at the show!!
