Attention clinical audiologists!

The TAPP Lab at Boys Town National Research Hospital wants to learn more about your use of otoacoustic emission (OAE) testing in children with suspected otitis media with effusion (OME).

We want to learn about your diagnostic protocols and whether OAE findings are factored into your impressions of middle ear and peripheral auditory function in this population. This information will help drive future research questions and provide additional guidance for enhancing the clinical care of children with OME.

Attention clinical audiologists!

The TAPP Lab is thrilled to welcome Haylee Hudson back to BTNRH as a member of our research team!

"I started working in research at BTNRH in the BEAR Lab under Dr. Anastasia Kerr-German while completing my B.S. in neuroscience and chemistry. After graduating, I worked in the BEAR Lab studying the neural and behavioral aspects of ADHD starting a graduate program at the University of Tennessee. There, I completed my M.A. in experimental psychology with a minor in statistics and data science while researching the neural and behavioral development of executive function under Dr. Aaron Buss. Now, I am very excited to continue my research career in the TAPP Lab in order to gain new experience and learn more about a new area of research. I have loved working with children in various research areas, and I am excited to continue here. Outside of research and school, I enjoy reading and spending time with my dog!"

The TAPP Lab's mobile ear and hearing studies involve seeing participants on a weekly or monthly basis. These quick visits often take place in less than 30 minutes. During the visits, we run a variety of tests to assess hearing status and ear health.

Trisha is a second-year Doctoral student of Audiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is very excited to work in the TAPP Lab this summer for her T-35 Traineeship! She is interested in how research can be applied to clinical practice in audiology and is eager to explore this process at Boys Town.

Trisha holds a BA in Linguistics, Anthropology, and Communication Sciences & Disorders from UW-Madison, along with a Certificate in Global Cultures, Languages, and Education. In her current AuD program, Trisha works in the Soundscape & Audiology Research Lab under Dr. Erik Jorgensen. She helps investigate how hearing loss and hearing aid usage impact social-emotional outcomes in older adults. Additionally, Trisha is looking forward to beginning her traineeship in LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities) next year.

In her free time, Trisha enjoys exercise, spending time with friends, hiking, playing the flute, and reading.

Most adults are familiar with the "listen for the beep" hearing test. But how can a child's hearing be checked if they are too young to tell you they heard the beep?

Audiologists use a test called VRA, which stands for Visual Reinforcement Audiometry, to check children's hearing between the ages of 6 months and 3 years. During VRA, the child is taught to associate the "beep" with a video on a screen. Once they learn to expect a video after the beep, they will signal this by looking toward the screen when the beep plays. The audiologist then presents the corresponding video as a reinforcement to keep the child interested. Responses to the beeps indicate how the child is hearing.

The TAPP Lab bid farewell to research assistant, Nafeesah, last week. Nafeesah was a valued team member and will be missed by her colleagues and our little participants who always had so much fun with her during visits!

Nafeesah graduated from the University of Nebraska Omaha with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in communication disorders. She will continue on at UNO in pursuit of a Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Best of Luck, Nafeesah!
