Black History Month is about honoring the leaders who create space for healing, growth, and transformation in our communities. Today, Collective of Color is proud to highlight Dr. LaRhonda Flowers, LIMHP, LADC.

LaRhonda is the founder of Restore Rebuild Reconnect Counseling Center (R3CC), and she is truly the heart behind the mission. With over a decade of experience working with teens, young adults, and adults, she brings compassion, cultural humility, and clinical expertise into every space she enters. Whether supporting individuals navigating trauma, mental health challenges, or substance use recovery, LaRhonda believes deeply in each person’s ability to rebuild and reconnect.

She holds a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision, a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and brings both strategy and heart to her work. In addition to leading R3CC and partnering with local community agencies, LaRhonda also serves as a professor and mentor, shaping the next generation of therapists with care and intention.

Her work reminds us that recovery takes effort, support, and courage—and that transformation is always within reach.

Taking care of your mental health doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It’s often the small, consistent choices that make the biggest difference over time.

Prioritizing yourself is not selfish — it’s necessary. Your well-being deserves daily attention.

Grief doesn’t follow a timeline, and it doesn’t look the same for everyone. Some days it’s tears. Some days it’s numbness. Some days it’s strength you didn’t know you had.

Wherever you are in your grieving process, your feelings are valid. You don’t have to carry it alone. Healing begins with giving yourself permission to feel.

Your pace is valid.

In a world that constantly tells us to move faster, do more, and be further along, it’s easy to forget that growth doesn’t have a deadline. Healing isn’t a race. Progress isn’t a competition.

Whether you’re taking big steps or simply getting through the day — it counts. Move at the speed that feels safe and sustainable for you.

Self-awareness is the quiet skill that changes everything. When you understand your thoughts, emotions, and patterns, you respond instead of react, set healthier boundaries, and build stronger relationships. Growth starts with noticing.

Your routine doesn’t have to be perfect — it just has to be consistent. Start small, build slowly, and create structure that supports the life you’re trying to grow into. One intentional day at a time.

Some things don’t need to be dramatic to matter. If it keeps showing up, keeps weighing on you, keeps tugging at you… it’s worth paying attention to. You’re not “too sensitive." You’re not overreacting. And you don’t have to wait until it gets worse to take it seriously. Listen to yourself. Your body and mind are usually trying to protect you.

Sometimes the breakthrough isn’t loud or dramatic. Sometimes it’s quiet. Subtle. A deep breath and the realization: that wasn’t okay.

Naming what hurt you is powerful. Acknowledging what crossed a line is healing. You don’t have to minimize your experience to move forward — you’re allowed to honor it.

Avoidance can feel like relief in the moment—but over time, it often keeps the stress alive. When we avoid what feels uncomfortable, our nervous system learns that the discomfort is dangerous, even when it isn’t. Gently facing what we’ve been avoiding, at a pace that feels safe, can help break the cycle. Therapy can be a supportive space to practice that shift with compassion, not pressure.
