Lions Eye Bank of Nebraska

Lions Eye Bank of Nebraska The Lions Eye Bank of Nebraska (LEBN) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 1960 by the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Imagine not knowing the color of a sunset...
or what a tree looks like...
Imagine being able to help. Even if you have been diagnosed with cancer
Even if you have received chemotherapy
You can still be an eye donor. You can make a difference. Thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of others around the world suffer from corneal blindness each year. By donating your eye tissue after death, you may contribute in a positive and generous way to restore or improve the sight of these people. All ages benefit from corneal transplantation. Sight restoration makes a tremendous difference in the quality of life to those in need. An eye tissue donation used in transplantation can help two people. An eye tissue donation used in research and teaching helps thousands and can make a difference for generations to come. Sign up on the Nebraska Donor Registry. Go online to: donatelifenebraska.com

You can indicate your wishes when obtaining or renewing your drivers. When you state that you want to be a donor at the DMV, your name is automatically placed on the Nebraska Donor Registry.

November is Eye Donation Month, and we want to remind you that nearly anyone can be an "Everyday Hero" by registering as a donor and giving the gift of sight.

Since our formation in 1961, EBAA member eye banks have provided tissue for nearly 2.5 million life-transforming corneal transplants. Right now, there are an estimated 12 million people around the world suffering from cornea blindness that could be treated with a cornea transplant - so registration is critical!

We thank all the eye bankers who work every day to worldwide - they are true "Everyday Heroes"!

Grabbing for a toy may look like normal infant behavior, but for Silas, this moment meant that he could finally see. Silas was born in December 2023 with a very rare eye condition that causes the cornea to become opaque rather than clear, and his mother, Ellie, was told he would be blind. After getting a second opinion, cornea experts at OSHU Casey Eye Institute suggested cornea transplants could help restore sight to both eyes and he had his first procedure in March of 2024. Because Silas’ condition was so rare, they couldn’t be certain the treatment would work – until Silas reached out for the toy. At almost 2 years old, he has had three corneal transplant surgeries. The older Silas gets, the fewer transplants he’ll need. Ellie is hopeful the next one will be able to last up to five years, and Silas’ care team is hopeful he’ll go on to have a relatively clear vision with little to no issues.

November is Eye Donation Month! All month long, we will help raise awareness about cornea donation and transplantation, honor the gift of sight given by donors and their families, and celebrate cornea transplant recipients who are now able to live their lives to the fullest. Join us in spreading the word and helping to give the gift of sight! 💙💚 Thank you to VisionGift for this follow-up story!

September is National DMV Appreciation Month! 💙💚🚗 This month, we recognize the vital role of DMVs and Driver License Partners (DLPs) in saving and healing lives by asking customers the donor registration question every day. Our DMV partners are the people on the front lines of service who have helped more than 165 million people across the country register their decision to be a deceased organ, eye and tissue donor.
