Tips for surviving the holidays:
- Find a calm and quiet place to feed your baby. Some babies can become overstimulated when they are passed around. Some older babies can easily become distracted with the hustle and bustle of the holidays.
- Anyone have the sniffles? Set boundaries with sick guests. Your little one doesn't have the same immune system as an adult. For the health of everyone, it is okay to keep your distance from sick guests or even consider skipping gatherings where there are known sick guests. It is okay to ask guests to wash their hands before touching your baby and ask that guests (family or not) not kiss your baby.
- Keep your little one close and consider baby wearing. It keeps your little one near you, sick guests away, and can help keep your little one calm when things get loud and exciting!
- Put others on non-baby tasks. Instead, ask your guests to bring food, help you clean or set the table.
- Know that it is okay to say no to committing to big gatherings, hosting events, staying out late, or passing your baby around. Do what is comfortable to you and your baby.
- Did you know we as Lactation Consultants get many calls about Mastitis, plugged ducts, and low supply around the holidays? It can often be traced back to skipping or delaying feedings/pumpings, high stress, and poor rest. Make sure you are taking time to feed your baby and remove milk from your breasts regularly.
- Keep things simple! Skip the fine china and consider simple items! Disposable cutlery, disposable tablecloths, and simple meals are options to consider.
- When picking out your holiday wear, consider tops and dresses that are easy to feed or pump in! Layer holiday tops over camisoles.
