We’re proud to celebrate Tinashe “Nash” Mahupete, this year’s recipient of the 2026 ICAN Leadership Award, honoring leaders who embody the 4 C’s: Collaboration, Compassion, Confidence, and Creativity.

During his remarks, Nash said, “This award says more about QLI than it does about me.” This is a reflection of the humility Nash brings to QLI every day.

Nash is the second QLI leader to receive this honor, following Patricia Kearns in 2018.

This prestigious award is a testament of optimism in action—people lifting each other, leading with purpose, and creating possibilities every single day.

Congrats, Nash, and thank you to everyone who made this year’s ICAN Women's Leadership Conference a HUGE success.

One sentence and a thank-you card—sometimes that's all it takes to tell someone you appreciate them.

Nikki Hanley, a QLI spinal cord injury rehabilitation program participant, spearheaded a project for fellow residents to seek out team members who are crucial to their recovery and program.

Moments like these are what make the QLI community so special. Stay tuned for a deeper dive into Nikki’s remarkable story.

Last Tuesday, a phantom was sighted on QLI's East Campus.

During interactive workshops with Opera Omaha , QLI East Campus residents crafted custom costumes, wrote original lyrics, and created characters tailored to their unique personalities to develop an original rendition of Phantom of the Opera.

When showtime arrived, the cast delivered a "Phant-astic" performance to a packed house.

We'd like to spotlight the East Campus Life Path team—specifically Zach Lindsey and Mary Sheldrick— for all of their efforts, along with the kind and creative souls from Opera Omaha for helping bring this to life!

For Bella Rodriguez, putting on makeup is more than a morning ritual. It is an art that vividly expresses her individuality, talent, and spirit.

In Bella’s Speech and Life Skills sessions at QLI, her passion for makeup became a focal point of her program. A stroke left Bella with severe aphasia, which made it difficult for her to express herself. “When she first came to QLI, Bella was only able to say single words,” said Kaitie Correll, Bella’s speech therapist. “Now, she’s advanced to speaking full sentences and paragraphs.”

Kaitie and Taryn Owens helped Bella develop a presentation centered around her makeup routine. They rehearsed speech strategies using cue cards for weeks until Bella was finally ready.

Last Friday, Bella took center stage and presented her tips and techniques for a robust cosmetic routine to a group of QLI team members, fellow clients, and family members.

It was a culmination of the hard work Bella has poured into her program and an illustration of the remarkable progress she has made on her road to recovery.

Months ago, Jessie Phillips had the ring and a plan. But a mosquito bite left him with a debilitating case of the West Nile virus and put everything on hold. As Jessie battled the severe effects of the disease, his girlfriend, Katie, remained faithfully by his side.

As he recovered and rehabilitated at QLI, Jessie’s desire to pop the question intensified. In physical therapy, he worked with Sam to build the strength and coordination he’d need to kneel and stand on his own. In occupational therapy, Jessie and Melissa practiced holding and opening the ring box over and over again until he was ready.

Jessie partnered with Janelle in Life Path Services to work out every detail of the renewed plan. Calls to the florist, setting a date and location, acquiring the ring, planning the after-party all needed to be arranged.

Finally, on Jessie’s last day at QLI, which also happened to be Katie’s birthday, Jessie asked for Katie’s hand in marriage on the dock at the lake at QLI.

Katie said, “Yes.”

Congratulations, Jessie and Katie, and thank you for allowing us to be a part of your very special day.

Hitchcock Nature Center was the beautiful backdrop of QLI’s first camping trip of the season.

Life Path Services team members, Zach, Eileen, Mando, and Mia, organized and hosted a crew of campers from QLI’s East Campus to enjoy perfect weather, hiking trails, s’mores, songs around the fire, and most importantly, lasting memories with friends.

We thank this team for going far beyond the walls of traditional recreational therapy to help our residents live out their passions.

We are hiring a Registered Dietitian! Food for thought. Food is more than nourishment — it’s healing, connection, and recovery.

At QLI, we’re seeking a Director of Clinical Nutrition. This person will lead with purpose, shaping how nutrition supports individuals rebuilding their lives after brain and spinal cord injuries. If you believe food is a powerful part of care, this is your opportunity to make an impact.
