Mental health often intertwines with what we can and can't control. Understanding this balance is crucial. We can control our responses, our self-care routines, and the choices we make to support our well-being. But there are things beyond our control.

By embracing this balance, we empower ourselves to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

As Black History Month comes to a close, WhatMakesUs is proud to celebrate the incredible contributions of Black individuals in the field of health.

Today we are highlighting Ira Combs.

We celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of Mr. Ira Combs, a true pioneer in health care and a steadfast champion for North Omaha. As a nurse and community advocate, Mr. Combs dedicated his life to ensuring access to health care for those too often overlooked, founding North Omaha Area Health and providing care wherever it was needed, even from the trunk of his car.
His tireless work not only improved the health of countless individuals but also inspired a generation of Black youth to pursue careers in health and service. Mr. Combs believed that “somebody has to do something,” and he lived those words every day, embodying courage, compassion, and leadership.

As we honor Black history, we remember and celebrate his enduring legacy in care, empowerment, and community that continues to shape North Omaha and beyond.

"Mental health is important to me because I think everyone deserves to be happy and to live life to the fullest. I don't believe any of us could have peace if we don't take care of our mental health.

I have struggled with mental health challenges, and I am working on getting through these challenges everyday. Everyone deserves to think clearly and manage their emotions effectively."

It's important to understand that mental health includes many aspects, such as our relationship with food and our bodies.

Eating disorders can impact anyone, and recovery is a journey that requires compassion, empathy, and support. Let’s create a space where we can talk openly about these struggles without fear of judgment.

She has published more than fifty scientific papers on topics like race‑related stress, discrimination, su***de, and emotional wellbeing, and she is widely recognized for her efforts to understand and improve mental health outcomes in communities historically underserved by traditional mental health systems. "I think with daily struggles the cost of daily living going up, relationships and the curved balls life throws at you, it's important to take care of yourself. However that looks to you. For me I play video games with a group of friends.

Sometimes I like to bowl, and watch tv with family, and friends when I feel overwhelmed. I think taking care of your mental health is important."

This Valentine’s Day, remember that love takes many forms and starts with kindness toward yourself.

-Love isn’t only romantic-There are so many ways to give and receive love, from friendships, family, community, and self-compassion.

-Your relationship status does not define you- Being single, dating, or married does not determine your value or happiness.

-Avoid comparing yourself to others- Everyone’s journey is different. Comparison can steal joy and fuel unnecessary self-doubt.

-You don’t have to love yourself perfectly to deserve love- Growth and self-compassion are ongoing. You are worthy, flaws and all.

-It’s okay if today feels difficult- Emotions are valid. Feeling sadness, longing, or discomfort does not mean you’re failing.

-Love is not something you have to earn- You are inherently deserving of love, care, and connection simply by being you.

Take a moment to show yourself compassion and recognize that you are enough, exactly as you are.

Children’s Mental Health Week is a reminder that emotional wellbeing matters at every age. When children feel seen, supported, and safe to express their feelings, they are better able to grow, learn, and thrive.

Supporting children’s mental health means listening, creating connection, and reminding them that it’s okay to ask for help.
