Introducing Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller! 🧠✨

Dr. Fuller has played a pivotal part in health through his research and created ample opportunities for People of Color. He made ground-breaking discoveries with Alzheimer's and prevented the misdiagnosis of syphilis by properly training. Even with all his achievements, he still struggled with racial discrimination. He was underpaid and underemployed compared to his white colleagues.

Dr. Fuller's legacy lives on, though, as his portrait is hung at the APA in Washington, D.C.

Celebrating Black Mental Health Advocates ✊🏾🤍

Bebe Moore Campbell was a literary rebel who used her books to address the impacts of racism, mental health issues, and strength within community. Aside from her literacy work, she co-founded the NAMI Urban Los Angeles and revolutionized how communities of color speak about mental health. There is a huge stigma about mental health within POC communities, but she recognized that the lack of mental health care was playing a huge role in that. She advocated for the unheard struggles within the POC communities and united people through safe spaces. Within these safe spaces, people were welcomed to openly discuss their experiences without judgment. Today, her legacy lives on through Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in July.

Life is PRECIOUS and grief is HARD! Grief can come in many forms( death, loss of employment, loss of a relationship, loss of independence, etc).

On February 14th, I get to attend my nephews funeral. Since learning about his death I’ve gone through some of the stages of grief which includes denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. I’ve spent a lot of time in the denial stage. In fact I was in the denial stage until this morning when I said to myself “This is really happening”. I’ve also spent time in the anger stage. Angry that I won’t be able to hear his voice anymore. Angry how this all happened. Angry for my brother, niece and his mother that they have to experience this.

In the midst of grief one must remember to use their coping skills, rely on their support system, and feel all the feels whether you want to or not.

Remember life is PRECIOUS so make sure you make time to hug your loved ones and tell them you love them. I will never be able to hear “Hey Auntie” followed by a hug from again.

I AM A PROUD, BLACK-OWNED BUSINESS ✊🏾🤍

Not only do I take pride in being a black-owned business, but I also LOVE being a part of the 5% of black therapists. Being able to show my community that it's okay to talk about your feelings and you CAN pursue your dreams of being a therapist fills me with joy. ✨

Happy Black History Month! ✊🏾✨

As a black woman business owner, I take so much pride in our history because if our ancestors didn't stand up against injustice, I wouldn't be where I am today. I wouldn't be able to make a positive impact on our youth day in and day out without the people who forced change.

This month, let's celebrate the ones who paved the way for us! 🤍

Today, we stand in solidarity with our community. I can't sit idly by as our neighbors are being kidnapped, murdered, and beaten in the streets for exercising their constitutional rights. We must stand as one, as we are stronger together. Take time today to educate yourself on your constitutional rights, protest economically, and/or use your voice to speak out. Have a blessed day! 🤍

S.A.D., also known as seasonal affective disorder, is in full effect with the winter weather. 😞❄️

Here are five ways that you can cope with S.A.D.:
1. Socialize: This weather makes everyone want to stay warm within their homes, but it's important to socialize. Socializing with others will improve your mental health and fight your feelings of loneliness.
2. Improve your sleep cycle: Sticking to a sleep routine will help you process your emotions, improve your concentration, and help you stay calm under stress.
3. Exercise: When we exercise, we are reducing levels of stress and anxiety AND releasing feel-good endorphins. These two combined will help you combat S.A.D.!
4. Use a light box: Using a light box in the morning can help trick your brain into thinking you're being exposed to sunlight. This effect helps you cope with S.A.D..
5. Open the blinds: The natural light flooding into your home will help improve your mental health and let your brain know it is daytime.

Do you know someone who struggles with S.A.D.? Share this post with them to help with their winter blues.
