Dementia can make it hard for the brain to recognize people. It doesn’t mean they don’t love you or that you did something wrong. Their brain is just mixing up memories. The most important thing you can do is be patient, kind, and remember that your time together still matters.

šŸ“š It’s World Book Day! I’m a licensed Clinical Social Worker and founder of Pando Geriatric Counseling, P.C., and the author of two books: Understanding Dementia and The Four Bridges of Grief.

It may sound strange to say, but I hope you never need my books. If you ever do, they were written to help start important conversations and guide children—and the adults who love them—through difficult emotions.

Sometimes a book can open the door to conversations that matter most. Buy them on Amazon today!

Gardening can be a meaningful activity for older adults living with dementia. Simple tasks like watering plants, digging in the soil, or planting flowers can spark memories, provide gentle movement, and create a sense of purpose.

Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature can also reduce stress, lift mood, and encourage conversation with loved ones.

This Earth Day, consider inviting an older loved one to help plant something new — sometimes the smallest moments grow the biggest memories. šŸŒŽšŸ’š

This means many older adults can become dehydrated without realizing it. Even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue, dizziness, confusion, and an increased risk of falls.

A good habit is to drink small amounts of water consistently throughout the day—even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Today is National Pet Day. 🐾

For many individuals living with dementia, pets can provide comfort, routine and a calming presence. Studies show that animal companionship may help reduce anxiety, ease agitation, and encourage meaningful moments of connection.

Whether it’s a lifelong pet, a therapy animal, or simply time spent with a furry friend, those small interactions can make a big difference.
