Omaha snow season is back, and that means shoveling driveways and sidewalks. Before you head outside, take a minute to protect your spine.
Here are a few quick tips to prevent back injuries while clearing snow:
✅ Warm up first – 5–10 minutes of light movement (marching in place, arm circles, gentle stretches) helps prepare your muscles.
✅ Push, don’t lift when possible – It’s less strain on your lower back to push snow rather than scoop and throw it.
✅ Bend at your hips and knees – Keep your back straight and use your legs to lift. Avoid bending and twisting at the same time.
✅ Keep loads light – Smaller scoops are much safer than one heavy lift.
✅ Switch sides often – If you’re throwing snow, alternate directions to avoid overloading one side of your spine.
✅ Take breaks – Fatigue increases injury risk.
If you feel tightness, sharp pain, or stiffness after shoveling, don’t ignore it. Early care can prevent small strains from becoming bigger problems.
Stay safe, stay warm, Omaha — and take care of that spine! 👐❄️
