Grief is bigger than we often realize.

When people hear the word grief, they often think of the death of a loved one. But grief can arise from many types of loss—some of which are less visible but still deeply meaningful.

We may grieve:
• Relationships that ended
• Life transitions or major changes
• The life we hoped we would have
• A loss of stability, health, identity, or community
• The version of ourselves we were before something changed

These experiences can bring sadness, confusion, anger, or longing—because grief is a natural response to loss, even when the loss isn’t traditionally recognized.

Giving yourself permission to acknowledge these feelings is an important part of healing. You do not have to minimize your experience just because others may not see it.

All grief deserves space, compassion, and support.

Many mental health conditions have early warning signs.

Before disorders like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or other serious mental health conditions fully develop, people may experience prodromal symptoms—subtle changes that signal the brain may be struggling.

These early signs can include:
• Sleep disturbances
• Social withdrawal
• Changes in thinking or concentration
• Mood instability
• Declines in school, work, or daily functioning
• Changes in perception or unusual experiences

Because these symptoms are often gradual or easy to overlook, people may dismiss them as stress, burnout, or personality changes. But recognizing these patterns early can make a meaningful difference.

Early support and intervention can improve outcomes.

If you or someone you know is experiencing concerning changes in mood, thinking, or functioning, talking with a mental health professional can help clarify what’s happening and identify next steps.

Seeking help early is a sign of strength, awareness, and care for your well-being.

April is Counseling Awareness Month đź’š

Counseling supports people through some of the hardest—and most meaningful—moments in life. Whether it’s navigating anxiety, healing from trauma, strengthening relationships, or simply having a space to be heard, counseling matters.

At the UNO Community Counseling Clinic, we see every day how access to care can change lives. That’s why we’re committed to providing low-cost, high-quality services while training the next generation of counselors.

This month, we celebrate:
✨ The courage it takes to seek help
✨ The growth that happens in the counseling process
✨ And the counselors doing this work every day

If you or someone you know could benefit from counseling, this is your reminder—you don’t have to do it alone.

Most of us would never say to a client, student, friend, or child:
“You’re not doing enough.”
“You should be further by now.”
“Your worth depends on your productivity.”

But we say versions of those things to ourselves all the time.

What if instead we practiced:
✨ “What I’m feeling is valid.”
✨ “I can give myself grace.”
✨ “My worth is not defined by my work.”
✨ “I’m allowed to say no.”
✨ “Look how far I’ve come.”

Self-compassion isn’t lowering the bar.
It’s creating enough internal safety that growth becomes sustainable.

This week, notice how you speak to yourself — especially on hard days.

If you wouldn’t say it to someone you care about, it might not belong in your inner dialogue either.

03/24/2026

When someone has lived in stress, trauma, chronic anxiety, or even chronic pain for a long time, their inner dialogue often sounds like survival:

• “This will never go away.”
• “I’m always afraid.”
• “I’ve gone backwards.”
• “I can’t handle this.”
• “I need to fix this.”

Survival talk isn’t weakness — it’s a nervous system trying to protect you.

Healing begins when safety talk slowly becomes possible:

• “Healing takes time.”
• “Fear is just a pattern.”
• “Recovery is up and down.”
• “It’s okay to feel this.”
• “I can let this be.”

In therapy, we’re not forcing positivity. We’re helping the brain experience enough safety that the language begins to shift on its own.

If you notice survival talk in your mind this week, pause — not to fight it, but to gently offer it something safer.
