When student athlete Sophia Varn injured her hand in a state quarterfinal basketball game at Millard South High School, she tried to tough it out and play through the pain. But after a reinjury a few months later, it was time to have surgery. Luckily, she had the OrthoNebraska team behind her to provide expert care and root her on through the whole process.

Winter is one of the busiest seasons for our hand therapy team, and for good reason. Icy sidewalks and snowy driveways mean more slips, more falls and more wrist, hand and finger injuries — often called FOOSH (Falling Onto an Out-Stretched Hand).

A few simple changes can help you stay safe during the last stretch of winter weather:
• Wear shoes with solid traction
• Slow down, take smaller steps and give yourself extra time
• Choose cleared walkways, even if they’re slightly out of the way
• Use handrails whenever you can
• Stay aware of the terrain as you move

If a fall does happen, we’re here to help. Our orthopedic urgent care is open days, nights and weekends to get you evaluated quickly so you can start healing sooner. Read the full blog for more winter safety tips. https://orthonebraska.com/ice-and-falls/

She’s headed back to the Olympic stage. ⛷️

Our favorite Olympian, Nina O’Brien, has officially qualified for the 2026 Winter Olympics, and we couldn’t be more excited for her! After battling through injury, Nina’s journey back to elite competition is a powerful reminder of what determination, patience and the right care can make possible.

Comebacks aren't easy. They take resilience, trust and a team committed to helping athletes return stronger. Nina’s story reflects our goal of helping people get back to doing what they love.

We’ll be cheering her on every turn of the way. 💙

Comeback Athlete Spotlight: Alex Christensen

Early in his sophomore season, Alex broke his hand during a game. Instead of stopping, he finished his at-bat and delivered a double. That moment says everything about who he is as an athlete. Tough, focused and unwilling to back down.

After his injury, Alex dedicated himself to recovery. He worked consistently, stayed motivated and returned strong for summer Legion baseball. By the time his junior season arrived, he was back to competing at a high level and setting an example for the players around him.

Alex continues to show what hard work looks like. His coaches describe him as someone who lifts up his teammates, leads through action and approaches every challenge with the mindset to improve. We're proud to highlight Alex as a true comeback athlete and celebrate the dedication that brought him back to the field! Fort Calhoun Community Schools
