A quick antibiotic reminder for parents:
• Liquid antibiotics have a short shelf life, so toss them when your child finishes the prescription
• Always shake well before each dose to make sure the medication is mixed properly

Small steps like these help make sure your child is getting the right dose every time.

Not sure when a fever means it’s time to call the doctor? You’re not alone. Here are some helpful fever guidelines for kids:

1️⃣ Under 30 days old? Head to the ER right away if your newborn has a fever.
2️⃣ Fever + red flags? A stiff neck, bad sore throat, or ear pain? Time to schedule a visit.
3️⃣ Your gut says something’s off? Trust it. We’re just a phone call away.

Most fevers can be safely managed at home with Tylenol or ibuprofen. Remember that ibuprofen is only for kids 6 months and older. And if you’re ever unsure, give us a call at (402) 917-6944. We’re here to help. 💙

Knowing where to go when your child is sick or injured can feel overwhelming, but some situations need emergency care right away.

Urgent care is NOT the right choice if your child has:

- A fever in infants under 30 days old
- Serious cuts or burns
- Trouble breathing
- Chest pain
- A severe head injury
- An obvious broken bone
- A severe allergic reaction
- Loss of consciousness

In these moments, call 911 or go directly to the emergency room.

For most everything else, we’re here to help guide you. We strongly encourage calling ahead for scheduling urgent care to help minimize your wait.

Measles has been detected in Lincoln wastewater for the first time. Are you and your loved ones protected?

Measles is not a mild childhood illness. It is one of the most contagious viruses and can cause serious complications, including:
• Pneumonia — the leading cause of measles-related death
• Brain inflammation (encephalitis) — can lead to seizures and permanent brain damage
• SSPE (subacute sclerosing panencephalitis) — a rare but fatal neurodegenerative disease that can develop 7–10 years after measles, especially when infection occurs in young children

Why are we seeing measles outbreaks?
The measles vaccine has been a victim of its own success. As vaccination rates decline, outbreaks return.
• 1 MMR dose = ~93% protection
• 2 MMR doses = ~97% protection
• 95% vaccination coverage is needed for herd immunity
• Currently, only ~90–93% of U.S. children are vaccinated against measles

The MMR vaccine is safe, effective, and has been used for decades. Vaccination protects your child and helps protect infants and others who cannot yet be vaccinated.

Our goal is simply to share accurate, evidence-based information and help families make informed decisions. We care deeply about the health and safety of you, your children, and our community.

A New Approach to Pediatric Care

Nebraska Home Pediatrics was founded in 2017 by a mother of four whom knew about the inconveniences of having a sick child first hand. With more than 15 years of healthcare experience, the founder decided to take her passion of helping sick children on the road with the mobile pediatric practice, Nebraska Home Pediatrics. The practice first started with board certified nurse practitioners at NHP coming to your home when your child is sick and providing high-quality, personalized care. The nurse practitioners are trained and licensed to treat minor illnesses and injuries as well as write prescriptions when medically appropriate, in addition to wellness exams. Appointments with NHP are convenient and quick, plus there is no waking of a sleeping child, no long waits in a clinic lobby, and no unnecessary exposure to other sick children.

In the summer of 2018, school physicals with immunizations were offered as an additional service. The physicals included Kindergarten, Seventh Grade and Sport physicals completed from the convenience and comfort of the patient’s home. With this new approach to pediatric care, insurance payers are not yet up to speed with this health care model and therefore the home wellness exams have been denied payment from the insurance companies. This denial of claims was very frustrating since the only difference with the physicals was the place of service - office versus home. Due to this place of service stipulation, it was decided to offer wellness exams from an office but to continue offering the house calls for sick visits so that there was no exposure to sick children during wellness exams.
