One of our audiology extern students for this past year, Myra Kraemer, focused her externship project on investigating how hearing aid technology levels influence hearing aid fittings, expressive vocabulary and speech recognition in noise.

After reviewing 120 hearing aid fittings, we found no significant differences between technology levels for how well the hearing aids were fitted, expressive vocabulary scores, or speech in noise understanding.

One of our outstanding questions is what factors influence decision making by parents and audiologists regarding technology levels?

RMSE is a helpful clinical tool to determine how well hearing aids are fitted to the recommended prescriptive targets. Is RMSE a clinical tool you utilize as an audiologist or have heard your child’s audiologist talk about?

2026 will be the 20th consecutive year of training AuD students in research at BTNRH. Over 75% of the T35 students who have completed their research training at BTNRH have first-authored or co-authored publications in top-tier journals.

We are proud to share that Boys Town National Research Hospital has been selected as a recipient of the Imagine Grant: Go Further, Faster Award from
Amazon Web Services (AWS), receiving a Pathfinder Generative AI award.

This award supports our work to improve pediatric hearing care by using machine learning to predict ear canal shape and acoustics through simple, non-invasive measurements. By combining generative AI with 3D printing, we can create custom hearing aid earmolds without traditional ear impressions, making the process more comfortable for children, reducing clinic visits, and delivering precisely fitted hearing aids to those who need them.

We are grateful to have collaborated with AWS through this award as we continue advancing research and innovation that helps children hear better.
