“Service has been a cornerstone of my Creighton experience because it has helped me see the Omaha community through new eyes,” said nursing junior Ashley Wilkerson. “As a nursing student, I’ve learned to approach every person with openness and compassion.” 💙

One of her most powerful memories came during her Service and Justice Trip to Oklahoma. Ashley worked with Habitat for Humanity and met the mother whose home they were helping build. “Learning about her hopes for her family reminded me that every act of service matters, no matter the scale.”

Ashley says the Creighton community has shaped her to be more intentional in how she serves and how she hopes to lead as a future nurse. “I’ve learned the importance of caring for the whole person and looking beyond simple fixes to understand deeper needs.”

Sixty years ago, Jan McDermet Maly, SJN’48, and her husband, James Maly, MD’46, survived a plane crash deep in the Amazon jungle.

Known across Nebraska as “the flying doctor and nurse,” the couple lived their Creighton training by serving others with courage, skill and unwavering faith, even in life’s most perilous moments.

For days, they cared for the injured, faced hunger and isolation, and relied on prayer and perseverance to survive. Jan’s compassion and strength in crisis continue to inspire generations of Creighton nurses.

📣 Starting August 2027, Creighton College of Nursing will welcome our first cohort of Doctor of Nursing Practice – Nurse Anesthesia students.

CRNAs are vital to patient care across Nebraska, particularly in rural communities. Our new program will prepare nurse anesthetists to serve with compassion, competence and purpose. 🥼

This program is under review for initial accreditation by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs and no students will be enrolled in the program until initial accreditation is granted.

Phoenix faculty member Melissa Taylor, MSN, RN, is helping shape the future of nursing education. Alongside faculty from the College of Nursing and College of Arts and Sciences, she helped create an AI-powered chatbot that lets nursing students practice end-of-life conversations in a realistic, supportive way.

These difficult discussions don’t always happen during clinicals — this AI simulation bridges that gap. By engaging with the AI, students can build confidence, strengthen communication skills and learn how to speak with compassion and clarity when it matters most.
