Fred Shackelford is one of the founders of AAPT and a lifetime member. Fred didn't initially choose to become a pharmacy technician, but once he did, he found his calling.

"It happened because I was looking for a full-time job and was recommended by the chief pharmacist's wife to the position in the hospital," he said. "Later, I chose to continue to work as a pharmacy technician when some other jobs were suggested to me. I was comfortable in the role, and I enjoyed the work and my fellow staff and bosses.

When I look back on my career, I am proud of the many technicians and pharmacists I helped train and nurture to improve themselves and become better people. I am also proud of the pharmacy technician association (AAPT!) that several of us built from the ground up! I believe it has been a help to many technicians, and an inspiration to some technicians, to improve themselves and look for a way to provide better patient care."

Big News for Pharmacy Technicians! California has taken an important step forward with the passage of CA A.B. 1503, establishing a Pharmacy Technician Advisory Committee to guide the state’s Board of Pharmacy on technician-related matters.

The new seven-member committee will include four pharmacy technicians, two pharmacists, and one public member, giving technicians a dedicated voice in shaping the future of pharmacy practice.

While the committee currently serves in an advisory role without voting power, this marks a strong move toward expanding the scope and influence of pharmacy technicians.

Here’s to continued progress and recognition of the vital role technicians play in patient care and public health!
