Please join us in congratulating Rebecca Barall on receiving a grant from the Child Health Research Institute (CHRI).

Rebecca Barall is a doctoral student and graduate research assistant in the integrated Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (iCASD).

Title: Promoting Social Communicative Gestures in Minimally Verbal Children with Autism

Description: Early gestures, particularly pointing, are foundational to the development of social communication and are strong predictors of later language development in children. Minimally verbal children with autism often show limited use of gestures, which impedes their communication development. This project will evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention designed to teach imperative pointing (used to make requests), in minimally verbal children with autism. It will also examine whether these skills generalize to declarative gestures (e.g., pointing to share) and to gesture use during caregiver–child interactions.

Dr. Alice Shillingsburg (Professor and Director of iCASD) is the mentor and a co-investigator. Dr. Mariola Moeyaert (Associate Professor, University at Albany) is the Statistician Consultant.
