AMI 101: “Why my muscle won’t ‘turn on’ after a joint injury?”
Your muscle isn’t lazy—it’s being inhibited.
After a joint is irritated (injury/surgery/swelling), the nervous system reflexively “dims” nearby muscles to protect the joint. That reflex is called arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI). It’s common after knee, ankle, hip, and shoulder issues.
