I never thought I’d be the one asking for help.
Last winter, I was drowning. Between losing my job, caring for my aging mother, and trying to keep my community center afloat, I felt like I was unraveling. Anxiety had become my shadow, and depression, my constant companion. I kept telling myself I had to be strong. For my family. For my neighborhood. For everyone but me.
That’s when I found Release's Mental Health Department.
I’d known about them through our community partnership. I hesitated at first, there’s still a stigma in my community around seeking mental health support, but something about their approach felt different. It was human. It was safe.
One day I decided to reach out. From the first session, I felt seen. My therapist didn’t just listen she understood. She helped me unpack years of stress and grief, and guided me toward healing not just for myself, but for the people I serve.
But the real magic happened when I attended a group meeting. We were each carrying our own burdens. Together, we learned to release shame, release fear, and release the idea that we had to do it all alone.
By spring, I was back on my feet. I’d started a mental wellness initiative at the community center, inspired by Release. We hosted youth mental health nights, and even partnered with Release for further ideas.
And now, as Christmas approaches, I’m proud to be part of their “Release More Love” Campaign.
This year, we’re not just giving gifts, we’re giving hope. Through the campaign, Release is able to provide so many things to our community throughout the year! I’ve seen firsthand how love, when released intentionally, can transform lives!
I’ll never forget the mother who came to our center last week, tears in her eyes, saying, “I didn’t think anyone cared.” We handed her a wellness kit, and an invitation to our holiday dinner. She left smiling.
That’s what Release taught me: healing is contagious. When you release love into the world, it multiplies.
So this Christmas, I’m not just celebrating the season, I’m celebrating the release of Pain. Of Isolation. Of Everything that kept us from loving ourselves and each other.
And I’m inviting everyone to join us. Because when we release more love, we build a stronger, kinder, more resilient community.
