The Connection Between Coffee and Headache Relief
Coffee — or more specifically, caffeine — can both help and trigger headaches, depending on how it’s used and how your body responds.
Here’s how it helps:
Caffeine constricts blood vessels in the brain.
It enhances pain relief.
It can reduce inflammation and fatigue, giving short-term relief when used occasionally.
But there’s a flip side:
Caffeine withdrawal is one of the most common causes of “rebound headaches.”
Overuse (more than 2–3 cups a day) can create dependency, increasing headache frequency over time.
In short:
Occasional coffee can help calm a headache, but regular overuse can cause more of them.
At The Omaha Headache Clinic, we help patients understand how lifestyle habits — including caffeine use, posture, sleep, and spinal alignment — all work together to influence headache frequency and intensity.
