Since coordinating a golf outing for The Longest Day in 2017, Joe Pane has spent every year assisting the Alzheimer's Association in spreading awareness to accelerate research and quality care. Having volunteered for Walks in and around Omaha for several years, he served as co-chair in 2025 and now sits on the event's executive leadership team, as well as the Nebraska Chapter's Board of Directors. Joe and his family are all too familiar with the impacts of Alzheimer's and other dementia, losing his mother, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, while his older brother continues fighting his own battle. We're grateful to Joe for his years of dedicated support in the fight to !

Michele Magner first came to the Alzheimer's Association while working in an Omaha Assisted Living/Memory Care community. Realizing families needed additional help, she started a support group to facilitate conversations and provide education to residents' family and others in the area. Recognizing how important connection and hope are, she then began the community's Walk to End Alzheimer's team.

Michele, thank you for bringing people together on this journey!

Over 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s—impacting our loved ones and families every day. As the impact of the disease continues to grow, so does awareness of brain health. Nearly nine in 10 people say it matters as they age, but most say they don’t know how to take care of it. The 2026 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures explores what this means and why education is key. Watch 🎥. Share 🔁. alz.org/facts.

Over the past three years, Bert Quinlan has selflessly dedicated his time to the Alzheimer’s Association, even while caring for his beloved wife Beverly during her journey with Alzheimer’s. Their marriage of 65 years was a testament to love and resilience, and Bert’s commitment to supporting others has only grown since Beverly’s passing.

Bert has served as a panelist and tabling event volunteer at senior events in Lincoln, where he educates families navigating the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. His deep knowledge and personal experiences offer invaluable insight and comfort to those facing similar paths. He has also shared his and Beverly’s story through videos for the Alzheimer’s Association and fundraising appeals for United Way and CHAD, helping raise awareness and support for the Association.

Beyond his public advocacy, Bert is a compassionate and dependable presence for individuals in need. When a gentleman visited our office seeking Alzheimer’s resources and guidance, Bert was the first person we called. Without hesitation, he reached out, invited him to coffee, and encouraged him to attend a support group—offering not just advice, but genuine companionship. We appreciate you and all you do, Bert!

Siblings push us forward and show up without hesitation. For Melin Ross, that person is her older sister Vicky Ross Schaar, who rides beside her through hard miles and the meaningful moments. 💜🚲

Alzheimer’s has touched three generations of Melin and Vicky’s family. Their great‑grandmother, grandmother and father all had the disease. One day, Melin learned about a unique opportunity that would help them turn their grief into action.

At the time, Melin’s employer was the national presenting sponsor for Ride to End ALZ Nation’s Capital, but she hadn’t ridden in years. “My bike was basically a decorative piece. It was covered in dust, slightly rusted, and living its best indoor life for years. Then a coworker and dear friend, Christian Kingston, stepped in and ‘voluntold’ me that if he was doing the ride, I was too.”

Ahead of the ride, Melin called Vicky and said, “I’m not finishing this unless you’re next to me.” Without hesitation, she hopped on a plane and showed up ready to ride alongside her sister — well, technically behind her as she’s a little slower, according to Melin.

Now in her fourth year, Melin has experienced how Ride to End ALZ creates connection, purpose and healing. And by captaining her company team and serving on her local committee, she has met some incredible people — each with stories that stick with her.

“Ride to End ALZ is emotional. It’s energizing. It’s one of those rare experiences where you feel deeply connected to fellow riders, coworkers, families and even strangers cheering you on. There’s no such thing as a small effort here. Every mile matters. Every story counts.”

While riding alongside her sister, cracking jokes and honoring their loved ones, Melin likes to imagine their grandmother and dad cheering them on “They’d definitely be proud, supportive and maybe just a little embarrassed by our cardio and form.”

Knowing that they’re riding for the same people is meaningful. “We push each other up the hills, laugh when it gets tough, and have those quiet, emotional moments that remind us exactly why we’re there. We’re not just riding for who we’ve lost. We’re riding for the next generation so they never have to experience this kind of heartbreak.”

💜 On National Siblings Day, we honor Melin and Vicky and all siblings who turn love into action, grief into advocacy and remembrance into hope. Join them and participate in a Ride to End ALZ near you: alz.org/ride.
