💡 “I’m just getting old.”
If I had a dollar for every time I heard that in the exam room…well, you get the point. The truth? Getting older doesn’t automatically mean your joints have to seize up. What does matter is motion.
When your joints move through their full range—whether that’s a simple squat, a reach overhead, or a rotation twist—you’re doing more than just “moving.” You’re feeding the system. The joint surfaces bathed in Synovial fluid — the egg-white-like lubricant that cushions, nourishes cartilage, and reduces friction.
Conversely, when you sit too long, or operate in a tight range of motion, the synovial fluid flow slows, the cartilage gets less nutrition, the joint surfaces can stiffen and degrade. Research shows that joint immobilization reduces synovial fluid quality, leads to cartilage changes, and can increase the friction in the joint surfaces.
Bottom line: You’re not just getting old. Your movement patterns are either supporting your joints — or holding them back.
