Like with most things, consistency with care is imperative to a patient's success.

Many of our patients spouses will accompany them to their treatments. What's funny is in many cases it's the spouses who notice the changes first! They will tell us the changes they've been noticing... like, "my husband doesn't complain nearly as much," or "my wife is getting around so much better."

Often it's the people around us who notice the patterns before we do. Or things will start to show up in your everyday activity. Getting up and not using a cane to walk to the kitchen. Getting out of a chair isn't quite the feat it used to be. Walking the grocery store without having to constantly hold onto the cart...

It all matters! Pay attention and stay the course!

What is peripheral neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a progressive condition affecting the nerves of the body, mainly the legs, feet and hands. It can also affect “random” areas of the body. We have had patients come in with neuropathy across the chest and even on the upper thighs.

Symptoms include but are not limited to:
- Pins and needles sensation
- Tingling
- Numbness
- Loss of sensation – IE: can’t feel the gas pedal
- Weakness
- Loss of balance
- Pain

Traditional approach to care:
- Gabapentin
- Pain killers
- Amitriptyline
- Anti-seizure medications
- antidepressants

It’s important to also note that this is a progressive condition meaning – it continues to get worse over time and in many cases, we have seen ALL sensation lost to where people can no longer feel their feet. This creates serious issues like not being able to walk, drive, balance or feel if they have injured themselves. This is also an indication that if they do injure themselves it will take a very long time to heal due to lack of circulation and awareness.

While there’s no “cure” for neuropathy, the protocols that Dr. Cory has created at 4 Paths Acupuncture can significantly decrease the debilitating side affects of the condition. We have seen patient after patient start to regain sensation and get back to doing the things they love.

I was talking to one of our patients last week and she said that before getting treatement here at 4 Paths Acupuncture, her friends would ask her to go out to eat with them and she would tell them no - because getting up out of the chair at the end was so difficult and embarassing that she'd rather avoid it all together.

That broke my heart.
It's the little things... that become big things... when chronic pain is at play.

But then she continued...

She said that since she has been coming to 4 Paths, her life has completely changed. She can do those things that pain stole from her previously like cooking a nice home cooked meal, going out with her friends, walking the grocery store... things that she wouldn't even consider previously.

This made my heart swell, as you would imagine! And with tears in BOTH our eyes, we hugged and shared in a moment of gratitude for eachother.

The protocols Dr. Cory developed for back pain are extremely effective. In fact, it is one of the most common conditions he treats here at 4 Paths!

Like with any condition, every patient recieves a new patient consultation to discuss the details of their case and based on that conversation, Dr. Cory will formulate a plan specifically for what that patient needs to feel better. Everyone has a different scenario and should be treated individually, this is not a one size fits all situation!

Our Story

Cory Nyenhuis, DACM is our doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. He received his Masters degree in Tucson at the Arizona School of Acupuncture and Chinese Med and then his doctorate from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. He has been practicing martial arts for over 20 years, constantly working towards mastering his body in styles such as kung fu, qigong and tai chi.

Chalee Nyenhuis is the Clinic Director. She just retired her position of Licensed Massage Therapist after practicing for 10 years. Chalee is an avid yogi and is a certified teacher. Soon, she will also be offering health coaching for our patients and will be an integrative part in the functional medicine aspect of our clinic.
