"BUT MY SPEECH IS JUST FINE."

What is speech therapy and what does a speech therapist really do? It's common to think that speech pathologists work with patients just on “speech", however this type of therapy is much more diverse than one may think.

Old Mill Rehabilitation's speech therapy team understands and appreciates the many ways our patients work and play. We create treatment goals that relate to you and your life. Our therapists work with you, your family, and your doctors’ to engage you in the process of speech therapy and will help you reach your goals. Speech therapy includes the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders related to speaking, swallowing and communication. We can work on speech and language difficulties that often occur following a stroke, brain injury, surgery, cancer, illness or neurological disorder such as Parkinson Disease. But there is so much more.

Throughout our program, we can help develop Cognitive-Communication Skills which are essential for everyday living. These include keeping papers organized, scheduling an appointment and remembering to attend or plan an event. We also focus on issues with swallowing like difficulty chewing and/or swallowing food, feeling like food is “stuck” in the throat, or coughing or choking during meals.

If you or a loved one has experienced a change or loss with memory, attention, thinking, cognition, voice, swallowing, speech or language, please contact Old Mill Rehabilitation at 402-934-7500.

• THE WEAK OLDER BODY MYTH

Do you believe that aging causes a decline in strength and vitality? Then you may be surprised to learn that these declines may have more to do with sedentary living styles and poor nutrition than to normal aging processes. Exercising stimulates protein synthesis, which increases muscle mass. Muscles of people in their 60s or later are fully capable of gaining and maintaining strength, given regular exercise.

Almost everyone can do some type of physical activity, perhaps brisk walking, riding a bike, swimming, weight lifting, or gardening. You should always check with your doctor if you have concerns or if you’re progressing from a more sedentary life style.

According to the National Institute on Aging, you should try all four types of exercise:
1. Endurance – try to build up to at least 30 minutes a day of activity that makes you breathe hard.
2. Strength – strong muscles help prevent falls and broken hips, and keep you self-sufficient.
3. Balance – try standing on one foot, then the other. Or get up from a chair without using your hands or arms.
4. Flexibility – stretch! It’ll make it easier for you to do day-to-day activities like tying your shoes – but don’t stretch so far that you hurt.

Exercise can energize you, relieve stress, and improve your sense of well-being. It’s the key to a more independent and longer life. Even for those who are challenged by illness or age-related weakness, and use home care services, it’s a good idea to incorporate doctor-approved physical activity into the plan of care. Weakness can often be reversed and overall health improved with light exercise.
