"BUT MY SPEECH IS JUST FINE."
What is speech therapy and what does a speech therapist really do? It's common to think that speech pathologists work with patients just on “speech", however this type of therapy is much more diverse than one may think.
Old Mill Rehabilitation's speech therapy team understands and appreciates the many ways our patients work and play. We create treatment goals that relate to you and your life. Our therapists work with you, your family, and your doctors’ to engage you in the process of speech therapy and will help you reach your goals. Speech therapy includes the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders related to speaking, swallowing and communication. We can work on speech and language difficulties that often occur following a stroke, brain injury, surgery, cancer, illness or neurological disorder such as Parkinson Disease. But there is so much more.
Throughout our program, we can help develop Cognitive-Communication Skills which are essential for everyday living. These include keeping papers organized, scheduling an appointment and remembering to attend or plan an event. We also focus on issues with swallowing like difficulty chewing and/or swallowing food, feeling like food is “stuck” in the throat, or coughing or choking during meals.
If you or a loved one has experienced a change or loss with memory, attention, thinking, cognition, voice, swallowing, speech or language, please contact Old Mill Rehabilitation at 402-934-7500.
