Black History Month is a time to honor the legacies, leadership, and cultural impact of Black Omahans whose stories continue to shape our city.
Right here in Omaha, we hold powerful pieces of American history:
š Malcolm X Birth-site ā One of the most influential human rights leaders of the 20th century was born in Omaha in 1925. Today, the Malcolm X Foundation maintains the historic acreage and is developing it into a vibrant cultural and educational center. https://visitnebraska.com/
š Great Plains Black History Museum ā Located in North Omaha, this museum preserves and celebrates African American stories across the Great Plains. Permanent exhibits like Hate & Hope and 24th & Glory shine light on civil rights, athletics, culture, and the powerful contributions of local Black leaders. https://gpblackhistorymuseum.org/
š 24th & Lake Historic District ā Once the beating heart of North Omahaās Black community, this area is rich with music, activism, and entrepreneurial history. Itās home to landmark sites such as the Omaha Star building and the historic Webster Telephone Exchange
This month ā and every month ā take a moment to learn, visit, and support the places that preserve Black history in our city. Omahaās story is richer because of the generations who built, led, fought, created, and inspired here.
