My background is in Social Research, I have an MS in Social Research and worked with marginalized communities.
🌸And, as a mindfulness, yoga and wellness educator and advocate I have share the term "Othering" and it's implication in our mental health, and how it blocks people's hearts from feeling compassion and humanity.
🌿 In sociology, " “OTHERING” is the social process of defining a person or group as fundamentally different from, and often inferior to, a perceived "normal" or dominant group, creating an "us vs. them" mentality that leads to marginalization, prejudice, and exclusion.
It involves attributing negative traits to "outsiders," reducing empathy, and establishing social hierarchies based on characteristics like race, gender, religion, or nationality, which can fuel discrimination and conflict."
🕊️ Part of our heart-led consciousness evolution is responding to shocking moments when people are dehumanized through "Othering".
🌸 Responding is not reacting, and it can include:
- Reflection
- Exploration of limited beliefs
- Speaking up for those who do not have a voice
- Protecting your ability to show compassion and humanity
- Raising a generation of humans who are going to lead with compassion and emotional intelligence. .. and so forth
Stay grounded in your humanity.
With love,
Alexis 🙏
