Today we recognize Maternal Mental Health Awareness Day, a time to highlight the importance of mental and emotional well-being during pregnancy and throughout the first year after birth. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, and other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders affect many mothers and families, yet they often go unrecognized or untreated. Raising awareness helps reduce stigma, encourages open conversations, and promotes early screening, support, and access to care. Maternal mental health is a critical component of overall maternal and infant health, and supporting mothers supports healthy families and communities. 🤍 Strong systems and support are reflected in Nebraska’s breastfeeding data.

According to CDC data, Nebraska ranks:
⭐ 1st in the nation for exclusive breastfeeding through 6 months
⭐ 3rd in the nation for exclusive breastfeeding through 3 months
These outcomes don’t happen by chance—they reflect strong collaboration, education, and advocacy statewide.

Let’s keep building on this success to ensure equitable breastfeeding support for all Nebraska families.

In the United States, su***de and accidental overdose are leading causes of maternal mortality, and women and those with the capacity for pregnancy are most at risk for developing a substance use disorder during their reproductive years.

Substance use during the perinatal period is much more common than many of us realize, but many maternal & child health professionals feel uncomfortable and ill-equipped in knowing how to support a pregnant or parenting client who is struggling with substance use.

You can make a difference.

Attend PSI's virtual Perinatal Substance Use Disorders training on December 8, 2025 and become equipped with the data, knowledge, and skill set to recognize and effectively respond to substance use concerns during pregnancy, early parenthood, and with the birthing parent/child dyad.
