We welcome Alison Chab, RN, BSN, a Doctor of Nurse Practitioner student at Nebraska Methodist College, as she completes her doctoral scholarly project right here at BCHC.
Ali’s project focuses on something many families quietly face — postpartum depression. In simple terms, she is studying whether virtual peer support groups (held on Zoom) can help reduce symptoms of postpartum depression. Over the past couple weeks, Ali has been meeting with patients individually, and the peer group will now begin meeting online. Participants gather to talk through challenges, celebrate the wins, learn the signs and symptoms to watch for, and connect with helpful resources in their communities. It’s peer-to-peer support — and research shows that this kind of connection helps people feel supported, empowered, and less alone.
This topic is especially close to Ali’s heart. She has close friends who have struggled with postpartum depression, and she is currently 8 weeks postpartum herself — giving her both professional knowledge and personal perspective. Ali previously worked at Methodist Women’s Hospital for three years and now works at OrthoNebraska in the OR.
We are proud to help shape the next generation of advanced practice nurses through projects like this. BCHC has strong postpartum initiatives in place, routinely screening new mothers through the NPQIC Postpartum Alert Warning Signs to ensure they receive early and appropriate support.
At BCHC, caring for moms doesn’t stop at delivery. We are committed to recognizing the signs, having the conversations, and walking alongside families — because healthy moms build healthy families!
