Was absolutely about to sit down and overanalyze that session.

Again.

Instead? I put my shoes on.

Because sometimes grit isn’t insight.
It’s interruption.

It’s catching the sympathetic spiral and choosing regulation before rumination.

I’ll reflect later.
Right now we walk. 🐾

There’s a difference between concealing and correcting.

Concealer covers.
It hides the blemish.
Smooths it over.
Makes it look like it was never there.

And honestly?
That’s how a lot of therapists were trained.

Hide the uncertainty.
Cover the mistake.
Don’t let them see you sweat.
Don’t let them see you repair.

But that’s not what we do in The Gritty Therapist.

We don’t conceal.
We correct.

Correction requires humility.
It requires regulation.
It requires enough vagal brake to say:

ā€œI missed that.ā€
ā€œThat landed wrong.ā€
ā€œLet me try that again.ā€
ā€œI want to repair.ā€

Concealing is sympathetic.
It’s fast. Protective. Image-focused.

Correction is regulated power.
It expands the gap between activation and response.
It says: I don’t have to defend myself to be competent.

And here’s the truth - clients don’t need flawless therapists.

They need therapists who:
• Can tolerate their own mistakes
• Model repair
• Stay present instead of performing perfection

We are not here to airbrush our clinical work.
We are here to build resilience in real time.

Concealer hides.
Correction builds grit.

There’s a difference between holding space and carrying it.

Therapists aren’t meant to absorb.
We’re meant to co-regulate, witness, and release.

When you learn how to stay in your body while someone else untangles theirs, you can leave work… at work.

That’s grit.

Are you wanting to find and develop your own grit? Did you know we have a class for that?!

A yawn doesn’t always mean boredom.

Most of the time, it means a nervous system is regulating.

And when I need to yawn in session. It gives me a chance to teach my clients that it’s ok for them to yawn too.

Yawning is often a parasympathetic shift.
A reset.
A discharge.
A return toward balance.

It’s biology…not disrespect.

I don’t want my clients learning to override their bodies.

So many of us were taught to suppress:
• yawns
• tears
• deep breaths
• shaking
• stretching

We learned to ā€œbe appropriateā€ instead of being regulated.

But grit isn’t about suppression.
It’s about expanding the gap between activation and response, without abandoning your body in the process.

If my system needs a yawn to settle?
I’m not going to teach it shame.
