When building a new connection, would you rather sit face-to-face making small talk… or share an activity while you chat?

🧩 Conversation flows more naturally
🧩 Awkward silences feel less intense

If your child struggles with making friends or engaging with family, a shared activity can be the perfect bridge.

Whether it’s crafts, a game, or an outdoor adventure—doing something together can open the door to connection.

It’s easy to forget how many social rules go unspoken—until someone struggles to pick them up.

Things like:
💬 Interpreting facial expressions
💬 Knowing when to take turns in conversation
💬 Understanding what’s considered “socially appropriate”

For autistic teens and concrete thinkers, these social gray areas can make relationships tricky.

So what is concrete thinking?
It’s a literal, black-and-white way of interpreting the world.

That’s why step-by-step guidance and direct teaching of social interactions can be so helpful—not to change how someone connects, but to support their understanding in a way that feels clear and respectful.
