đź’™ March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of screening for one of the most common cancers affecting both men and women.

Colorectal cancer often develops slowly and may not cause symptoms early on, which is why screening plays an important role in detecting concerns before they become more serious. The American Cancer Society recommends that people at average risk begin screening at age 45, while those with certain risk factors may need to begin earlier based on their provider’s recommendation.

Throughout March, Mille Lacs Health System employees are wearing blue ribbon t-shirts to help raise awareness and encourage conversations about the importance of screening and early detection. Proceeds from this year’s shirts raised $900 to support colorectal cancer research.

🤝 March is National Social Work Month, a time to recognize the vital role social workers play in supporting patients and families through complex medical and personal challenges.

Mille Lacs Health System has established a dedicated Social Services Department, strengthening support for patients across the Senior Care Unit, Acute Care, the Emergency Department, and Hospice. Social workers help address the social, emotional, and practical factors that influence health, providing crisis support, coordinating care transitions, and connecting patients with community resources.

🏥 Today we recognize National Hospitalist Day and the physicians who specialize in caring for patients during their hospital stay.

Hospitalists play an important role in coordinating care, managing complex medical needs, and working closely with nurses, specialists, and other members of the healthcare team to support patients throughout their time in the hospital. We thank the hospitalists at Mille Lacs Health System for their dedication to caring for patients and supporting our community each day.

You may notice some physicians have “MD” after their name, while others have “DO”.
So what’s the difference?
Both complete medical school, residency training, and are fully licensed physicians. The difference comes down to philosophy and additional training.

Dr. Booker explains the DO credential, and why he chose this path:
"A Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) completes the same medical training as an MD and is fully licensed to practice medicine. In addition, DOs receive specialized training in osteopathic manipulative medicine, which uses hands-on techniques to support the body’s natural structure and function. This perspective emphasizes the interconnectedness of body systems and the importance of treating the whole person. I chose to pursue a DO degree because I wanted to approach patient care with a broader set of tools, particularly for those facing chronic health conditions, and because I value the osteopathic focus on understanding how lifestyle, structure, and function all contribute to health."
Both MDs and DOs provide high-quality, evidence-based medical care - just with slightly different training perspectives.

All of the providers at Mille Lacs Health System are committed to high-quality, compassionate care.
