What a Bone Density Test Does
• A bone density test (DXA scan) measures calcium and mineral content in bones, usually the
spine, hip, or forearm.
• It helps detect osteoporosis or low bone mass before fractures occur.
When to Get Tested
• Women age 65+ and men age 70+ should have a baseline test.
• Earlier testing (around age 50) may be recommended if you have risk factors such as:
o History of fractures from minor falls (fragility fractures)
o Long-term use of steroids (like prednisone)
o Low hormone levels (post-menopause, prostate cancer treatment)
o Family history of osteoporosis
o Smoking, heavy alcohol use, or certain medical conditions (e.g., diabetes)
How Often to Repeat
• Typically, every 2 years, but frequency depends on your health, medications, and risk factors.
• Follow-up scans should ideally be done on the same machine for accurate comparison.
Why It Matters
• 1 in 3 women over 50 will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.
• Detecting bone loss early allows for lifestyle changes (diet, exercise) or medications to
reduce fracture risk.
