Free weights are better than weight machines. When you lift free weights, you use your stabilizer muscles to help steady the weight and keep it from moving on you. This is beneficial because you can use heavier weights with a greater range of motion, which will allow for greater muscle growth.
The disadvantage to free weights is that they are more challenging to use because you have to balance the weight yourself without any help from machines. If you're new to the gym, it's best to start with a simple machine like a leg press or chest flye machine until you get comfortable using free weights.
If you're looking for more challenging exercises, then try doing a dumbbell bench press or dumbbell row as opposed to using a barbell on a flat bench press machine.
