🦴 Bone of the Week: Clavicle (Collarbone)
The clavicle connects the upper limb to the trunk and acts as a strut that stabilizes the shoulder, allowing a wide range of arm movement.
🔎 Interesting facts:
• One of the most commonly fractured bones in the body
• Most fractures occur in the middle third of the bone
• Often injured after a fall onto the shoulder or outstretched hand
Clavicle fractures are frequently seen in sports injuries, cycling accidents, and falls.
Treatment depends on fracture type and displacement — many heal well with conservative management, while some require surgical fixation.

Stress Fractures: The Injury You Can’t Always See 🦴

Stress fractures are small cracks in the bone caused by repetitive force or overuse (typically bones in the lower extremities) — not a single traumatic event. They’re common in runners, athletes, military recruits, and anyone who increases activity too quickly.

How do they happen?
When muscles become fatigued, they can’t absorb shock as well. That extra stress transfers to the bone, and over time, tiny cracks begin to form.

⚠️ The tricky part:
Stress fractures often don’t show up on initial X-rays. In many cases, they’re only clearly visible on an MRI, which can detect bone stress reactions before a full fracture line develops.

Common symptoms:
• Gradual onset of pain
• Pain that worsens with activity
• Tenderness over a specific spot
• Relief with rest

Treatment typically includes:
✔️ Activity modification
✔️ Protective boot or brace
✔️ Gradual return to sport
✔️ Addressing training errors or footwear

Early diagnosis matters — pushing through the pain can turn a small stress injury into a complete fracture.

If you’re having persistent pain that isn’t improving, don’t ignore it. Let’s get it checked out. 💪

Meet Brannon Massey, one of our dedicated Orthopedic Technicians!

Brannon plays an important role in patient care — assisting our physicians with clinic procedures, applying casts and braces, preparing patients for evaluation, and helping ensure each visit runs smoothly from start to finish. His hands-on work helps support both patient comfort and recovery every day.

Outside of the clinic, Brannon is currently a student at Auburn University pursuing his goal of one day becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon. We’re proud to have him as part of our team while he works toward a future in orthopedics!

Ankle sprains are one of the most common lower extremity injuries we see 👣 — and they’re more than “just a twist.”

When the ligaments that support your ankle are stretched or torn, you may notice:
✔️ Swelling
✔️ Bruising
✔️ Pain with walking
✔️ Instability

Treatment typically includes:
• Anti-inflammatories to help reduce pain and swelling
• A walking boot or ankle brace depending on severity
• Structured physical therapy to restore strength and stability

Early evaluation helps prevent chronic instability and repeat sprains.
Don’t just walk it off — let’s get you back safely and stronger than before 💪

When you come in with an upper extremity fracture, one of the treatment options you may receive is an Exos® brace.

Exos is a thermoformable, custom-molded brace designed to provide secure fracture support while offering more comfort and convenience than traditional immobilization.

🔥 Heat-molded for a precise, custom fit
🔄 Adjustable as swelling changes
💧 Water-resistant
🧼 Removable for hygiene (when approved)
💪 Durable, stable support for proper bone healing

For some injuries, Exos can be used right at your initial visit. In other cases, it may be introduced after the earliest healing phase.

Every fracture is different — and our physicians choose the option that protects your injury while setting you up for the smoothest recovery possible.

Swelling is normal from an injury, chronic conditions, and surgery — but managing it properly can speed up recovery 👇

✔️ Elevate above heart level
✔️ Ice 15–20 minutes at a time
✔️ Use compression as directed
✔️ Keep gentle movement (when cleared)

Too much swelling can increase pain and delay progress.

If swelling suddenly worsens or feels unusual, don’t ignore it — get it checked. Our physicians are always here to help!

Healing takes strategy, not just time.

ACL Tear? Here’s What You Need to Know:

The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is one of the key stabilizers in your knee. It’s commonly injured during sports that involve cutting, pivoting, or sudden stops — think football, soccer, basketball, or even a simple misstep.

🚩 Signs of an ACL tear:
• A “pop” at the time of injury
• Immediate swelling
• Knee instability or giving way
• Pain with weight-bearing

🩺 How are ACL tears treated?

Treatment depends on your age, activity level, and goals.

✔️ Non-surgical treatment
Some patients can improve with physical therapy, bracing, and strengthening to restore stability and function.

✔️ Surgical reconstruction
For active individuals or those with significant instability, ACL reconstruction surgery may be recommended. There are multiple approaches, but typically the torn ligament is replaced with a graft to restore knee stability.

💪 Rehab is key — whether surgical or non-surgical — and guided physical therapy plays a huge role in getting you safely back to the activities you love.

If your knee feels unstable or painful after an injury, don’t ignore it. Early evaluation leads to better outcomes. Our physicians are highly trained in the latest ACL reconstruction techniques, so you get care that’s modern, precise, and tailored to your recovery!
