🌸 Understanding Your Pap Smear: Why It Matters 🌸

Taking care of your health starts with prevention — and one of the most important preventive screenings for women is the Pap smear.

💗 What Is a Pap Smear?

A Pap smear is a screening test that checks for abnormal cells on the cervix that could lead to cervical cancer.

It can detect:
✔ Precancerous changes
✔ Cervical cancer
✔ HPV-related cell changes

Early detection saves lives.

👩‍⚕️ What’s the Difference Between a Pap Smear and a Pelvic Exam?

Many patients think they’re the same — but they are not!

🔹 Pelvic Exam:
A physical exam where your provider checks the v***a, va**na, cervix, uterus, and ovaries for abnormalities such as cysts, tenderness, infections, or masses.

🔹 Pap Smear:
A specific screening test where cells are gently collected from the cervix and sent to the lab to look for abnormal or precancerous changes.

👉 You can have a pelvic exam without a Pap smear.
👉 You may not need a Pap smear every year, but you may still need an annual exam.

📅 When Do Pap Smears Start?

According to current guidelines:

✔ Pap smears typically begin at age 21
✔ Ages 21–29: Usually every 3 years (if normal)
✔ Ages 30–65: Pap smear + HPV testing every 5 years (or Pap alone every 3 years)

Your provider may adjust this based on:
• Abnormal history
• HPV results
• Immune conditions
• Pregnancy history

✨ Why This Matters

Cervical cancer often has no symptoms in early stages.
Routine screening allows us to catch changes before they become cancer.

Prevention is powerful. Screening is simple. Your health is worth it.
