I had the honor and privilege of being the Project Director of the Where We Live: Opelousas Neighborhoods Project.

What makes this photo exhibit special is that it is not told from one voice or one point of view. It is told through the lenses of community members — long-time residents, newer residents, visitors, and those who simply love Opelousas and St. Landry Parish.

The photographs come from neighborhoods like Brickyard, The Hill, North End, South Park, and many others. Each image reflects how someone experiences home.

Today, for the exhibit's opening, folks came out through the rain and the cold, the attendance was phenomenal! I want to thank our leaders, photography leads and instructors, and our workshop hosts who opened doors, shared space, and helped teach others how to use their camera phones and see their surroundings in new ways. This truly has been a collaborative and community-driven effort.

The 7th day of Kwanzaa is Imani, Faith. We know faith without works is dead 😉 When you feeling unsure about your birth, anxious about the outcome, fearful of what you may or have not experienced, take action. Journaling, daily affirmations written and said aloud, meditating on birth, visualizing yourself opening up and the baby turning and passing through you safely will help you. Do this consistently. Know that your Imani in yourself can be the defining point in your birthing success.

Habari Gani? KUUMBA Habari gani!
The 6th day of Kwanzaa centers CREATIVITY. We know Black folk are a creative people. Alot of times people focus on the song and dance part, even our food. Our creativity is also seen in our braiding, basket weaving, spoken word, metal work, farming, healing and yes the creation of life. Babies are one of the greatest forms of creation, because the potential they have to make and create this world better than the way we give it to them. And that's peace.

Today's Kwanzaa principle is NIA. I've noticed that when you educate and explain WHY the body does certain things during labor, mamas not only have a better understanding, but also less fear surrounding the labor process. Fear increases pain, because you naturally want to run away from what can cause you pain. In the case of birth, the contractions (or rushes as some say), need to confronted, leaned into, centered and meditated on. There is a purpose, a reason, for your womb and your cervix to be doing what it does during labor. Remember the Nia of childbirth. You will see your baby soon.

It's not enough to just "Buy Black."

There are people who will come amongst us because they see the money, clout, or another way to get attention. Blood suckers to our community. And once the headwraps and kente cloth ain't "poppin," you won't hear from them again. SMH Please do your due diligence to support those who as Black people, have always supported Black people. Support those of us who as Black Birthworkers ALWAYS saw the need and responsibilty to serve Black families. UJAMAA-- Cooperative Economics.

Ujima focuses on us being committed and active for a common cause. It is also being clear that without collective work, liberation is far from being attainable. Intentional Black parenting circles, travel collectives can be safe spaces for Black families to nurture and support one another. We're all in this together.

Unity is the order of the day. The Nguzo Saba are principles that can be used in the space of birthing, especially as a Black woman. When organizing your birth team, make sure everyone knows their lane and how they should be supporting you. Also, your support team should be on board with your goals. If you're planning a natural birth, why have someone around who doesn't believe you can do it? Or who tries to sabotage the rest of your team who is truly supporting you? A divided birth team has already lost. Working together with a clear vision sets the stage for the best possible birth outcome.

âœĻ Professional Announcement âœĻ

I am honored to share that I am now a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and a Licensed Midwife in the state of Louisiana.
My journey began in 2012, when two huge things happened: I trained as a doula through ICTC, and I received a scholarship to begin my studies as a student midwife with Mercy in Action Distance Academy. At that time, I already had 2 children. Over the years, my family grew-- and today, I am the mother of five.
Like so many of us, my path was not linear. There were seasons of starting and stopping, pausing and returning; always with the goal still in sight.

What remained constant was my commitment to this work and my belief in the importance of midwifery, maternal health, and birth justice.

Today, I stand in this moment, having completed THIS PART of the journey — not because it was easy, but because I was consistent, determined, and rooted in purpose.

As I step forward into practice through Divine Birth Wisdom, my vision is an intimate, relationship-centered midwifery practice that honors family, rest, sustainability, and community accountability, while continuing my work as an advocate for maternal health and birth justice.
I am deeply committed to serving families in Opelousas and throughout St. Landry Parish with care that respects autonomy, safety, and cultural wisdom.

Thank you to everyone who supported me along the way. I am grateful AND ready. ✊ðŸŋ

I want to crush on the phenomenal women of Birth Future Foundation and for continuing to pour into Black Midwives, Doulas and birthworkers through the Watering the Seeds and Bloom Grants. Last year, as a student-midwife, I was granted through the Watering the Seeds Fund, and this year, I was gifted a surprise Bloom Grant.

Many, many thanks for seeing me, and funding my rest and restorative well being. This is the work ✊ðŸŋ
I'm humbled and in gratitude. 💜

I'm Friday born, and on this, my 45th year my bday fell on a Friday. I'm in gratitude for life and for living. I enjoyed the awesome Erykah Badu celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Mama's Gun. I remember being in college when that dropped and this lyric has always stood out for me:

"When my freedom comes along, I'm gonna run child/Cause I know that I'll go far..."

Many thanks for all the bornday blessings!
