This month, we raise awareness for pancreatic cancer — one of the most challenging cancers to detect early, but one where awareness can save lives.

What to know:

Pancreatic cancer often shows few symptoms in the early stages.

Common signs can include abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, jaundice, and loss of appetite.

It is the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S.

Early detection and knowing your risk factors make a difference.

At Southwest Louisiana Primary Health Center, we encourage our community to:

Today, we recognize World Pneumonia Day, a reminder that pneumonia is preventable and treatable, yet it remains one of the leading causes of death among children and older adults worldwide.

🩺 What is pneumonia?
It’s a lung infection that causes cough, fever, and difficulty breathing.
Anyone can get pneumonia, but young children, older adults, and people with chronic conditions are most at risk.

💙 Prevention is key:
✅ Get vaccinated — flu, COVID-19, and pneumococcal vaccines all help protect your lungs.
✅ Wash hands regularly and avoid smoking.
✅ See your healthcare provider early if you have symptoms.

This month, we bring awareness to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) — a long-term lung condition that makes it hard to breathe and affects millions of Americans, especially here in Louisiana.

🫁 What is COPD?
COPD includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema — both cause airflow blockage and breathing problems that get worse over time.

⚠️ Common symptoms:

Shortness of breath

Persistent cough or wheezing

Chest tightness or fatigue

COPD can be managed with early diagnosis, medication, breathing exercises, and quitting smoking.
