Is your pet acting "off" but you can't put your paw on why? 😿

Stress affects pets just like people. Small changes in routine, loud fireworks, or new animals at home can cause hiding, decreased appetite, or excessive grooming. 🐶

Simple swaps help. Try short calm outings, a predictable feeding schedule, gentle play before storms, and safe hiding spots. Pheromone diffusers and puzzle feeders also reduce anxiety for many pets. 🧩

Watch body language. Yawning, lip licking, tucked tail, or avoiding eye contact often mean stress. If signs persist, a wellness check can identify medical issues or behavior support options. 🩺

The old wives’ tale says dogs eat grass to make themselves throw up when their stomach hurts. But here’s the truth: veterinary behaviorists have found that most grass-eating has nothing to do with feeling sick at all.

For many dogs, nibbling on grass is actually a normal behavior. Some do it out of curiosity, boredom, or because they simply like the texture or taste (especially in the spring when fresh grass is soft and new). Others may be exploring their environment the same way they sniff, chew, and investigate everything else around them.

While occasional grass-snacking is usually harmless, there are a few things to keep in mind. If your dog is eating large amounts, vomiting frequently afterward, or showing other signs like lethargy or appetite changes, it’s worth taking a closer look. And always be cautious of lawns treated with pesticides, fertilizers, or chemicals that can be toxic if ingested.

The takeaway? A few bites of grass now and then doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong, but knowing your dog’s normal habits helps you spot when something might be off.

Sir Bentley graced us with his presence today and melted every single heart in the building 💛
Those big eyes, that flowing hair… we’re not saying he’s the main character, but we’re also not not saying it.

10/10 good boy. Would absolutely schedule again. 🐾

Everyday items around your home can be surprisingly tempting to curious noses and paws… and not all of them are safe to eat. Things like socks, hair ties, corn cobs, bones, kids’ toys, and even certain foods or medications can quickly turn into a dangerous situation if swallowed.

The tricky part is that pets don’t always show obvious signs right away. You might notice subtle clues like vomiting, lack of appetite, drooling, restlessness, or changes in bathroom habits. In some cases, swallowed objects can cause blockages that need urgent medical care.

If you think your pet may have eaten something they shouldn’t, it’s always better to act fast. Remove access to the item, avoid trying home remedies without guidance, and call your veterinary team right away for next steps. Quick action can make a big difference in keeping your pet safe.

Prevention is just as important, too. Keeping small objects picked up, securing trash, and being mindful of what’s left within reach can help avoid accidents before they happen.

When it comes to curious pets, what seems harmless to us can be risky for them. If you ever have a concern, we’re here to help you know what to watch for and what to do next. 💙

Happy National Puppy Day! Today we’re celebrating the wiggly tails, tiny paws, and big personalities that bring so much joy into our lives. Puppies might be small, but they come with big needs, from training and socialization to proper nutrition, vaccines, and regular checkups that set them up for a healthy future.

The first year of a puppy’s life is full of important milestones. Building positive habits early, protecting them from preventable diseases, and giving them the care they need now helps shape a confident, happy, and well-adjusted adult dog later on.

Whether you’re raising a brand new pup, thinking about adding one to your family, or just stopping to admire all the adorable puppy faces today, we’re here to help you every step of the way, from their first visit to every tail wag that follows. 💙

Tell us… what’s your puppy’s name (or your dream puppy name)? We’d love to hear! 🐾

A Healthier Future Starts with One Decision

You want to do everything right for your new pet — and one of the most impactful health decisions you'll make happens early. Pets that are spayed or neutered have significantly lower risks of certain cancers and behavioral issues, and studies show they tend to live longer, healthier lives overall.

Sandy Paws Animal Hospital performs spay and neuter procedures with care and expertise. Spaying removes a female pet's ovaries and uterus, eliminating heat cycles and reducing the risk of ovarian cancer. Neutering removes a male pet's te**es, which helps reduce aggressive behavior and prevents testicular cancer. Pets can be safely spayed or neutered as young as twelve to sixteen weeks, and our team will help you determine the ideal timing. The procedure is minimally invasive with quick recovery times. 🐶🐱

One small procedure can mean eighteen to twenty-three percent more time together.

📞 Call (904) 278-0600 or visit www.sandypawsanimalhospital.com to schedule your pet's spay or neuter today.

POV: I’m the patient and I’m checking out to go home

Okay… I’ve been very brave.
I allowed the poking.
I tolerated the ear looking.
I even sat still (mostly).

Now I would like to speak to the checkout department about my compensation package:

• 3 treats for emotional damages
• Immediate discharge to couch
• Car ride with window privileges
• No more “just one more thing” from the back 😒

Also… why is this taking so long??
I have places to be. (It’s my bed. I need to be in my bed.)

Please finalize my release. I am done being perceived.

The “itch” is back… and it’s starting sooner than you think 🐜🐾

As the weather warms up, fleas and ticks are waking up right along with it. If you paused prevention over the winter, March is the critical time to restart before these pests have a chance to settle in and multiply.

It only takes one flea or tick hitching a ride inside to turn into a full-blown infestation in your home. Beyond the itch, these parasites can also carry diseases that put your pet’s health at risk. The tricky part? By the time you notice scratching, hair loss, or skin irritation, the problem may already be well underway.

Starting prevention now helps stop fleas and ticks before they become a problem, not after. It’s a simple step that protects your pet’s comfort, your home, and your peace of mind as we head into the warmer months.

Not sure which prevention is best for your pet? We’re always here to help you choose the right protection for their lifestyle and keep them itch-free all season long. 💙
