"A Mother’s Story: Gretchen Ford
For Gretchen Ford, su***de is not an abstract issue; it is heartbreakingly personal. On a
Monday in May of 2022, approximately a month before his high school graduation,
Gretchen and her husband, Scott, lost their son, Collin, to su***de. That day changed their
lives forever.
“Some people think that the grief lessens over the years, but it doesn’t,” Gretchen says.
“Your life just eventually grows around it. Mondays are especially hard for both Scott and
me. Panic still sets in for him on the drive home, and for me, the ringing of a phone can
trigger overwhelming fear. Every day I go to work in the same library where I last saw him. It
is extremely hard, but I do it for two reasons: I don’t want any other mother to go through
what I’ve gone through, and I don’t want another student to feel the pain Collin felt in those
last hours of his life.”
She reminds us that youth mental health is a growing crisis, and resources often fall short.
At the time her family sought inpatient care for Collin, no beds were available in the state of
Indiana. Even outpatient counseling was diicult to access, and the reliance on medication

alone sometimes worsened suicidal thoughts.
Gretchen is now working to start a Su***de Bereavement Support Group and is part of the
LOSS team (Local Outreach to Su***de Survivors). She emphasizes the ripple effect of
su***de: research shows that for every death by su***de, 135 people are impacted. “The
waves never stop,” she says. “The best prevention we can give our kids is teaching them
kindness, how to treat others, how to take responsibility for their actions, and how to
support each other both in person and online.”"

In this month’s peer-reviewed Nature Genetics journal:

Autism is now being recognized as more than a single condition, thanks to a groundbreaking study that has identified four unique subtypes within the autism spectrum. Researchers from Princeton University and the Simons Foundation analyzed data from more than 5,000 children in the SPARK autism cohort, using an advanced, person-centered model that grouped individuals by shared developmental, behavioral, and medical characteristics. The result? Four clear categories Social and Behavioral Challenges, Mixed ASD with Developmental Delay, Moderate Challenges, and Broadly Affected each with its own clinical patterns and genetic underpinnings.

This revelation marks a fundamental shift in our understanding of autism. What was once considered a single diagnosis is now recognized as a cluster of separate biological entities, each requiring tailored attention and strategies. The study also highlighted how genetic disruptions manifest at different stages of childhood development some presenting early, others emerging later underscoring the importance of developmental timing in diagnosis and care. This level of nuance means families and clinicians can move toward far more personalized developmental monitoring and interventions.

By reshaping how we define and study autism, these findings pave the way for precision medicine in neurodevelopmental disorders. With a deeper grasp of each subtype’s genetic and clinical profile, researchers and caregivers can craft more effective support plans and targeted therapies, giving every individual the opportunity to thrive according to their unique needs.
