Just a friendly reminder to change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms when you turn your clocks back an hour this upcoming Sunday, November 2nd! If you have smoke and/or carbon monoxide alarms that have a 10-year battery installed, you don’t have to change the batteries but it’s a great time to check the installation date and test them to ensure they work.
As we come into the fall/winter seasons coupled with the holidays, it’s a good time to give your home a fire safety check up! Here are just a few tips on things to look for:
1. Make sure that your furnace or boiler is in good working order. Annual maintenance is key to efficiency and safety.
2. Have your chimney cleaned and inspected annually.
3. Be careful using alternative heating systems, including but not limited to fireplaces, wood-burning stoves, pellet stoves, or space heaters. Be sure that, if you’re burning firewood, it is seasoned, dry hardwood. If you are using space heaters, use them in accordance with their listing, that they are plugged directly into an outlet and not into an extension cord or power strip (this could easily cause an electrical fire!), and that they are a good distance away from combustible materials!
4. A charged fire extinguisher is ready for use!
5. Never leave candles unattended once they’re lit.
6. When setting up holiday displays, do not overload your electrical outlets by using power strips or multi-plug adaptors, and/or extension cords.
