This is a game I happened upon at Goodwill a few years ago, for $1!
The wonderful Leah and I have been running small, focused, social skills groups at for the last few weeks and really having fun with this new programming!
If you’ve been following along with me, you know that I try my hardest to make suggestions that are realistic and accessible. I never want to suggest spending lots more money or needing to learn a bunch of new info before trying an activity.
So… just HOW many skills can we target with one silly collaborative block building activity???
✨ social engagement- turn taking, encouraging friends, handling disappointment, trying again, being ok with friends building in a way we didn’t expect or want, planning and executing with a group, managing impulses to take over or maybe even to crash the tower, problem solving if things don’t go well
✨ fine motor- manipulating these tiny, oddly shaped blocks, stacking them and placing them carefully, picking them up from the table and manipulating them
✨ language and communication- talking about all of these things!!!! Using clear speech in order to be understood, communicating thoughts and ideas, saying kind words to friends
🧠🧐 the list can (and does) go on and on!
My point here- it doesn’t have to be expensive or fancy to meet age appropriate goals and work for you or your child!
And a side note- We can’t expect children to be great at taking turns without having some ways to practice and structured games are a really good way to model the expected blueprint of a turn taking exchange!
Have fun🩷✨
