As an orthopedic surgeon who has performed thousands of procedures over the past 20 years, I’ve seen firsthand how much a patient’s preparation can impact their surgical outcome. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned—both as a surgeon and now as a patient preparing for my own knee replacement—is that nutrition and strength matter more than most people realize.
Suboptimal nutrition is a major risk factor for complications. That’s why I tell my patients to prepare for surgery the same way an athlete prepares for a race: by focusing on strength, protein intake, inflammation control, and overall metabolic health. I’m following that same advice for myself.
Here are some of the key supplements I’m using to support healing and recovery:
🔷 Leucine – Activates muscle protein synthesis to rebuild tissue after surgery.
🔷 EAAs (Essential Amino Acids) – Provide the building blocks needed for repair, especially when protein intake is low.
🔷 Creatine – Helps preserve strength and supports energy production in healing tissues.
🔷 AAKG (Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate) – Improves blood flow and nutrient delivery to recovering tissue.
🔷 HMB – Helps reduce muscle breakdown and maintain lean mass.
🔷 Collagen + Vitamin C – Supports tendon, ligament, and connective-tissue healing. Vitamin C is essential for proper collagen synthesis.
Preparing properly can make a tremendous difference—faster recovery, better mobility, less muscle loss, and better long-term results.
If you’re dealing with a knee, shoulder, or elbow problem, or you’re preparing for an upcoming surgery, I’m here to help you navigate the best steps toward recovery.
